You never know when you are going to crash. I survived my first bike crash yesterday. Probably would be a drooling mess if it wasn’t for me wearing a helmet. Here is what happened. I was cycling alongside of Highway 37 in Indiana, and I was on the shoulder of the highway, which is about 5 ft wide, and I saw someone swerve off onto the shoulder ahead of me. I decided to look under my elbow to see if there was a cause for it behind me, or further up, and I missed a big discarded chunk of wood. I hit the block at an angle, which threw me from the shoulder, and directly into the lane of traffic I was just looking at. I was going every bit of 30 mph before I went over my handlebars. I had seen a car following me 40 to 50 ft back, and I had the presence of mind to try and land on my back, facing traffic to see which way I needed to go to avoid any traffic. I didn’t feel any injury when I landed, immediately stood up, the car that was closest had swerved off the road and onto the shoulder and came to a stop. I quickly pulled myself and the bike from the road, and the driver of the car gave me some supplies to wipe down my injuries. He was more visibly shaken than I was. I called my mom, who is an ER nurse, and she came to pick me and my bike up, and saw to my injuries. It wasn’t until after I had gotten cleaned up that I saw just how much my helmet got scraped up. Side note. Do you all ride on the shoulder, or directly on the road? And I’ll link pictures of my bike and injuries in the comments.

TLDR: gloves are a good idea, I’m a moron for not wearing them for the first 6000 miles of my cycling life. New gloves saved my palms after being convinced by reddit to change my ways I started riding a road bike in 2012. Since then I’ve ridden ~6000 miles, all without cycling gloves. Never crashed. About a month ago I started reading a few threads on how gloves will save your palms from being skinned alive and your basically an idiot for not wearing them. I ordered 4 pairs on amazon to see which ones I liked best. I ended up preferring the following best. Some more scrapes on the rest of me. I’m very lucky nothing serious.
