Road riding lesson learned

For 11 years now I've always knocked on wood when I said that I never fell on my bike. That changed Saturday. I was riding in the Bay Area in a hilly, narrow road well-known for many cyclists and unfortunately cars that use the road as a connector. I was climbing a section of road when there was a car behind me. I try to be accommodating when riding, so I moved over to the right as far as possible as there were no cars coming from the other direction and the driver needed all the room he could get to pass. As I was climbing, I'm not sure how it happened, but my front wheel slid to the right and got caught in a sandy ditch. I tried to recover it but I wasn't moving fast enough and I tipped over. I used my left leg and left forearm to catch my fall into the street and thankfully the driver didn't attempt to pass. I got up, and somehow I wasn't even scratched. Nice cyclists behind me asked if I was okay, and with a sheepish grin I told them that for a first fall my story will be a little boring. That being said, I asked myself what I could have done differently, and the answer I came up with is to hold my lane. Sure, share the road as much as you can, but don't jeopardize your safety for politeness sake. Take the road you need to keep yourself on two wheels, and expect, nay, demand patience from the drivers behind you.
