I have owned my bike for about three years. Up until February of this year, I maybe logged around 100-150km. Part of this was general noobie mistakes (like trying to bike in regular shorts and improper nutrition / hydration), but a major part of it was perpetual negative self talk and the inability to imagine a future that comes with depression. This year after some struggling in 2020, I decided that I was going to take cycling seriously for the sake of my mental health. I have a bike, trainer, and Zwift, so there was no real excuse as to why I could not and there are a multitude of studies that show regular exercise helps depression. February I started and logged around 150km for the month. During this time I felt a general lift in my mood and energy levels. Since I went from doing zero exercise to around 40km a week, I started drinking more water than usual and started avoiding foods that made me feel slow / groggy so I could have the energy to bike for the week. I noticed my FTP increased from around 110 to about 130 and felt impressed with myself and wanted to do more. March I decided to kick it up and challenge myself a bit more. I made an excel spreadsheet and challenged myself to get the "working from home badge" on Zwift, which required me to cycle for at least 5km a day for 14 days straight. I ended up cycling around 500km during March and was actually in a bit of disbelief. My FTP increased from 130 to around 150. Enter April. I figured since I have made it this far, I can definitely do more. There were several challenges in April - Tour of Watopia and Zipps Classics rides. I decided to do them all and end the month with an attempt for a metric century since I did my first 50km ride in March. Today I was able to log my first metric century and ended the month with 637km. My FTP is now 177. I have never felt physically or mentally better. Cycling, unlike other forms of exercise I have tried, seems to bleed into your life. I am eating better, drinking more water (around 2L on non-training days), sleeping better, and making decisions based on if, whatever I am doing, it will positively or negatively impact my ability to either a) get on the bike or b) perform well on the bike. The negative self talk has turned into words of encouragement and since I am no longer feeling fatigued, I am now doing other things such as daily walks, weekend hikes, and picking reading back up. My friends and family also report that I seem happier. Finally, and an unexpected perk I discovered, is the cycling community itself. People I never knew cycled, we suddenly chat about it and it is almost as if we have been friends for years. Online I have made several friends that I plan on eventually meeting up with to do longer rides despite their advanced level. And despite some of these individuals being at what I consider an incredible level of fitness, almost all of them are humble and quite encouraging. It certainly helps me stay encouraged, motivates me to continue my training, and has given me the courage to even write this post. I can honestly say this sport has changed my life and I look forward to what else it may have to offer.

Nette kleine Anekdote. Bisschen Fahrrad gefahren und ich komme da öfters an einer Stelle vorbei, wo der Schutzstreifen quasi zu jeder Uhrzeit von mindestens einem Auto zugestellt wird. Oft auch gerne die Kombination aus Lieferwagen und privatem Auto. Heute dachte ich mir, wenn da wieder mal jemand steht, dann mache ich ein Foto der Situation und bitte die Stadt mal darum dort vermehrt zu kontrollieren. Auf dem Schutzstreifen parken war ja eh schon verboten. Allerdings war "nur mal kurz halten" ja erlaubt (bis zu 3 Minuten). Das ist seit dem 28.04.2021 nicht mehr der Fall. Der Fahrer des weißen Wagens ist ein "netter älterer Herr" der mich anbölkt und meint: DU LÖSCHT SOFORT DAS FOTO! SONST RUFE ICH DIE POLIZEI! *Können sie gerne machen, habe ich kein Problem mit.* DAS WIRD JETZT GELÖSCHT! *Nein.* Ich rolle 5m weiter zu einer roten Ampel Der nette Herr fährt jetzt auf den Schutzstreifen stellt sich leicht schräg drauf. Will mich wohl blockieren aber ich habe noch Platz und rolle weiter. Sage ihm das was er gerade macht ziemlich teuer werden kann und das er vielleicht ja mal irgendwo parken kann und im Handy sich die STVO anguckt. Insbesondere die besagte Änderung. ICH FAHR DIR BIS NACH HAUSE HINTERHER WENN ES SEIN MUSS. *Das bezweifle ich.* Er fährt mir tatsächlich etwas hinterher. Ich biege rechts in eine für Räder freigegebene Einbahnstraße ein. Er bleibt stehen und guckt doof. Lache und fahre ungestört weiter. ​ Etwas schade das ich den Fahrer des Lieferdienstes auch anonymisiert habe. Er guckt mich sehr vorwurfsvoll und traurig an.

Bought it yesterday, did 7.7 miles (walked probably half). Commuted to work this morning, about 4 miles, mostly downhill. My butt hurts and my legs are tight but I already cannot stop thinking about getting back home. I’ll probably have to walk up those massive hills. That’s okay. I’ll walk up tomorrow, and next week I’ll walk up a bit less and less. And that’s what it’s all about for me.

Ich bin Momentan am überlegen so etwa 2000€ für ein Fahrrad auszugeben, dass irgendwie alles können muss, zumindest ziemlich viel. Ich habe da durchaus know-how, und weiß natürlich, dass es kein Fahrrad gibt, dass alles kann. Aber ich frage mich, was der beste Kompromiss ist. Was fahrt ihr so? Vielleicht gibt es ja auch nur Hersteller, die ihr mal schnell reinschicken könnt. Ich mache regelmäßig Rennradrunden unter 100km und will zukünftig alle längeren Strecken auch mit dem Rad zurücklegen können. Primär Asphalt, aber ich auf einer Reise nicht vom Belag abhängig sein. Also eher Gravel... aber ich will auch ganz gut mal sprinten können.... Für die Lasten ist mein Bullitt da. Führerschein habe und will ich nicht. Also der komplette Freak. Habe auch schon über Selbstbau nachgedacht. Dann stünde die Frage nach einem geeignetem Rahmen und ggf. anderen Sinnvollen Komponenten im Raum Was klar ist: - Rennradlenker, mindestens Bullhorn-Lenker ist für mich pflicht - unter 10 kg - Reifenbreite wohl nicht über 40mm - vorne 1x finde ich besser Was ich erstmal ganz interessant finde: - Canyon Endurace CF 7.0 (aber mmh.. carbon auf Langstrecke...was denkt ihr?) - Marin Headlands 1 oder 2 (eigentlich schon überm Budget) - Canyon Grail 7 1by (alu) - Bombtrack Arise Geared (Stahl, über 10kg) - Merida Mission CX 600 (alu, carbongabel) ich danke jetzt schonmal allen für ihre beiträge, ich bin einfach sehr am verzweifeln
