Yesterday I was overtaken by every single cyclist I came ...

Yesterday evening I went for a 20k ride (11k up and down) on this popular cycling road just outside my town. It's poular because it's like a perfect road, wide with plenty of space on the hard shoulder, mostly straight, with a few slight hills that wave up and down throughout the whole 11k stretch of road, and the scenery on either side is beautiful. As I was pushing myself to get up the first of these small hills into a headwind, this giant of a man just flies past me at a ridiculous speed. His calves were the size of my thighs, and I'm 250lbs so my legs are pretty big. Then another guy flies past. Then a couple of women fly past while talking about their day, as if they're not giving any effort at all. Turns out it was cycling rush hour, after everybody got off work, on the most popular cycling road in the area. I just stared in amazement as all these people passed me by. It's insane the speed they were all going at. I was even passed by someone who I'd say was at least 3 times older than me, and it also looked like he was just trotting along without putting in much effort. Then, on my way back I was passed by that barn sized guy with calves of steel a second time. He managed to do 2 laps of that road while I still haven't completed 1. In that moment I got so excited for what the future holds, and that one day I will be zooming it down that road just as fast as the rest of them. To all you seasoned riders, it's truly jaw dropping the speeds you can sustain for miles on end. That is all.

A retro attitude on headphones while riding.

For at least the last ten years during every bike ride I had my Bose sport headphones well-secured in the ear by my helmet strap, and with the volume set at a comfortable 50% or lower I could easily hear any car or other passers by behind me. I've never felt uncomfortable or unsafe riding with them. But a couple of weeks ago, I hopped on the saddle and took off while forgetting to bring my headphones. I didn't notice I forgot them until I had already descended the 10% grade hill that leaves my house, and there was no way I was starting my ride off with that climb. I decided to continue the ride without them. What was surprising to me was all the little things I hadn't heard before. The sound of the dog barking when you approach the yard, and the silence of when it stops barking as you pass. The stereo in the room of a random house, the click-click-click of my hub when I coast, the jump of a deer that runs into the woods. All sorts of little sounds that paint the complete picture of your environment that you never hear with the headphones on. Not to mention, any time I missed music, I would just think of a song in my head and I usually can mentally hear it anyways. With each of my last six rides, I've left the headphones behind. Not for fear of a citation or safety worries...simply because I didn't want them. The ride is entertaining enough. Edit: clarity

It was one of the most bizarre/random experiences of my life. I was riding in Glendale, CA today and a very large crow started flying across the street to my left, in my direction. I was thinking, “it’s headed towards me but I’m sure it will fly right over my head.” Nope it freaking T-boned me square in my left ribs and bounced off and flew away. Das Teil war ich sag mal extrem "modifiziert". Holland-Rad Lenker, Opa-Sattel mit Look Eisbärenfell und sehr abenteuerliche Konstruktion für Gepäckträger und Stützen für Satteltaschen die mit kleinen Klempnerschellen und sehr viel Geweband fixiert waren. Hatte vor 3 Jahren den Kram runter genommen und einen anderen Sattel, Lenker und Bremshebel drauf gepackt. Die Holland-Mäntel ebenfalls ausgetauscht gegen Schwalbe Durano Plus. Letzten Sommer ist dann der vordere Bremszug gerissen und ich hatte mir zur selben Zeit auch ein Single-Speed gekauft und bin damit jetzt gefahren. Hatte jetzt Zeit und Lust das wieder flott zu machen. Neuen Bremszug und neue Bremsschuhe mussten auch her, aber das war es dann eigentlich auch schon. Fährt sich recht angenehm mit einer 6 Gang Gangschaltung die schon drauf war. Amüsantes Detail ist das die Steuerung der Gangschaltung auf 7 Gänge ausgelegt ist. Ist also ziemlich zusammen geklatscht. Bin sehr überrascht das die Felgen noch absolut rund laufen und keinerlei Umwucht haben. Die Felgen sind wahrscheinlich wie das ganze Rad selbst aus den 80ern.
