In recent years, the e-bike has become increasingly popular in many European countries. With higher speeds and less effort needed, the e-bike is a promising mode of transport to many, and it is considered a good alternative for certain car trips by policy-makers and planners. A major limitation of many studies that investigate such substitution effects of the e-bike, is their reliance on cross-sectional data which do not allow an assessment of within-person travel mode changes. As a consequence, there is currently no consensus about the e-bike’s potential to replace car trips. Furthermore, there has been little research focusing on heterogeneity among e-bike users. In this respect, it is likely that different groups exist that use the e-bike for different reasons (e.g. leisure vs commute travel), something which will also influence possible substitution patterns. This paper contributes to the literature in two ways: (1) it presents a statistical analysis to assess the extent to which e-bike trips are substituting trips by other travel modes based on longitudinal data; (2) it reveals different user groups among the e-bike population. A Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model is estimated using five waves of data from the Netherlands Mobility Panel. Furthermore, a Latent Class Analysis is performed using data from the Dutch national travel survey. Results show that, when using longitudinal data, the substitution effects between e-bike and the competing travel modes of car and public transport are not as significant as reported in earlier research. In general, e-bike trips only significantly reduce conventional bicycle trips in the Netherlands, which can be regarded an unwanted effect from a policy-viewpoint. For commuting, the e-bike also substitutes car trips. Furthermore, results show that there are five different user groups with their own distinct behaviour patterns and socio-demographic characteristics. They also show that groups that use the e-bike primarily for commuting or education are growing at a much higher rate than groups that mainly use the e-bike for leisure and shopping purposes.

There is this old guy in my neighborhood I admire to no end. Every time i see him he's in just shorts and flip flops, no matter the weather, on an ancient 3 speed with the shifter missing. He's got a serious belly and a case of beer strapped to his back rack. The road up the hill varies from 6-16%, mostly at around 9%. He rides up that hill like there's no hill, shouting jolly encouragement at the top of his lungs to all the cyclists on road bikes in full kit as he passes them. "Come on! I'll give you a beer if you beat me to the top." and "You've got this! Don't let a silly hill best you!" This year, he's added handlebar streamers in hot pink and a bell I think you can hear in the next county that he rings like mad when he passes you by. It's impossible not to smile and try just a little harder, even though I'm totally being dropped by a guy who looks like Santa Claus on a tropical vacation on a bike that looks almost as old as he is. I really want to be just like that guy some day. What cyclists do you have around who stand out like that? They don't have to be oddballs. Maybe it's a guy who rides 30 miles a day rain or shine. Maybe it's the person who taught you to fix a flat. Maybe it's the old couple who live at the top of a horrible hill who give out popsicles to cyclists on hot days and reminisce about when they were young and used to ride up that hill every day and the time they road from Washington to California buying gear along the way because they just didn't want to stop riding one fine Spring day. Disclaimer: Den folgenden Text habe ich gestern unmittelbar nach der Ausfahrt geschrieben, als ich noch immer recht grantig war. Die Formulierungen mögen also stellenweise etwas unsachlich erscheinen und der ganze Rant auch ein wenig pauschalisierend, das Grundproblem bleibt aber dennoch. Ich fahre sowohl mit dem Rad zur Arbeit als auch sportlich mit dem Renn- oder Gravelrad nach Feierabend und am Wochenende. Keine Frage: Die größte Gefahr geht von Kraftfahrzeugen aus. Diese bringen mich mehrmals wöchentlich in potentiell lebensgefährliche Situationen. Verstärkt kommt es aber auch zu Konflikten mit einer recht neuen Klientel, nämlich E-Bikes. Und hier sind es zu 90% ältere Herren, die ihr gefährliches, rücksichtsloses Verhalten mit der in dieser Bevölkerungsgruppe so weit verbreiteten, selbstgerechten Arroganz an den Tag legen und im Zweifel dann auch noch verteidigen. Genau diese Situation hatte ich gestern drei Mal innerhalb von 15 Minuten: Situation 1: In einer Tempo 30-Zone nähert sich ein Mann in seinen Sechzigern an einer Kreuzung von links, ich habe also Vorfahrt. Die Kreuzung ist gut einsehbar, er sieht mich direkt an, also gehe ich davon aus, dass ich vorsichtig in die Kreuzung einfahren kann. Er fährt recht flott, geschätzt an der 25kmh-Grenze seines schweren Fahrrad-SUVs – und bremst einfach nicht ab. Ich bin zwar schon einen Meter in der Kreuzung aber bremse sofort, als ich das merke. Er legt sich fast auf die Nase, als er ausweichen möchte. Man merkt, dass er keinerlei Kontrolle über ein Fahrrad bei dieser Geschwindigkeit hat. Dann mault er mich an, warum ich denn eigentlich so rasen würde, und überhaupt: Diese Rowdy-Rennradfahrer immer. Situation 2: Das Highlight und einfach nur völlig irre. Ich fahre eine Strecke entlang, die ich für kurze Sprints nutze und bin gerade bei ca. 40kmh. Die Straße dort ist völlig gerade, es gibt keine einmündenden Seitenstraßen und der Asphalt ist einfach ein Traum. Ich nähere mich einem älteren Herren auf einem E-Bike. In der Ferne kommt ein Auto entgegen, aber die Geschwindigkeitsdifferenz zwischen mir und dem E-Bike ist wirklich sehr groß, also setze ich zum überholen an. Als der ältere Herr mich bemerkt, schaltet er wohl irgendeinen Turbo seines zweifelsohne illegal entsperrten E-Bikes an und hat innerhalb kürzester Zeit, ohne jegliche Anstrengungen und bei einer Trittfrequenz von wahrscheinlich 40 oder 50rpm meine Geschwindigkeit. Das entgegenkommende Auto nähert sich, während ich mich zwangsweise noch auf der Gegenspur befinde. Um einen Unfall mit dem Fahrzeug zu vermeiden, reihe ich mich hinter den älteren Herren ein, der dann schlagartig die Geschwindigkeit auf 18 kmh reduziert. Wow. Als das Auto aus dem Weg ist, setze ich wieder zum Überholen an, aber der E-Bike-Fahrer spielt das gleiche Spiel noch einmal. Er möchte mich nicht überholen lassen. Völlig verrückt. Situation 3: Ruhiges Wohngebiet. Ich fahre meinerseits wirklich langsam, kaum über 20 kmh. Vor mir ein E-Bike, das ich überholen möchte. Auf dem Gefährt sitzt die hier beschriebene Klientel. Da ich in solchen Fällen die erratische Fahrweise bereits antizipiere, überhole ich mit extra Abstand, wohl gut 2 Meter. Dennoch: Ohne Handzeichen oder auch nur einen angedeuteten Schulterblick zieht der Herr nach links, um in eine Hauseinfahrt abzubiegen. Ich schreie reflexartig laut „HEY!!!“ und versuche auszuweichen, dennoch berühren sich unsere Schultern, wir kollidieren also. Reaktion seinerseits: Was mir denn eigentlich einfalle, hier so zu rasen und ihn einfach so aus dem Nichts zu überholen! Für Argumente ist er nicht offen, sondern fängt an mich zu beleidigen. Versteht mich nicht falsch: Ich finde jede einzelne Person, die statt mit dem Auto zu fahren sich lieber auf ein Fahrrad setzt, grundsätzlich gut und unterstützenswert. Ich glaube auch, dass E-Bikes ein bedeutender Faktor für die längst überfällige Verkehrswende sein werden. Dennoch gerate ich eigentlich mit keinen anderen Verkehrsteilnehmenden (außer natürlich KFZ) so häufig in brenzlige Situationen, wie mit E-Bike-Fahrern. Häufig habe ich das Gefühl, dass diese mit einem astreinen Autler-Mindset unterwegs sind, jetzt aber halt auf einem motorisierten Fahrrad, und wirklich keine Ahnung haben, was sie da eigentlich tun (und im Zweifelsfall auch keine Kontrolle über ihr Gefährt haben). Mein erster Reflex ist, dass E-Bike-Fahrer, genau wie alle anderen motorisierten Verkehrsteilnehmenden, einen (in diesem Fall eher „kleinen“) Führerschein ablegen sollten. Aber irgendwie finde ich das doof, da es die Hürde höher setzt und die Verkehrswende ausbremst. Also: Was tun?

  Ride For a Better World May 14-16 RLK13 includes special contests, product giveaways and opportunities to get involved with advocacy through World Bicycle Relief, a global charity group that helps mobilize people in developing countries. WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF To honor 13 years of Ride Like King, one Buffalo Bicycle from World Bicycle Relief will be donated for every 1300km ridden collectively during RLK13 Zwift rides. Giant Group will also match the total number of bikes unlocked by the community, doubling the impact. Last year more than 2700 people participated, accumulating nearly 120,000km to provide 100 Buffalo Bicycles to people in need. These purpose-built bikes are engineered for heavy loads, long distances and rugged terrain. They are manufactured by Giant Group and assembled by World Bicycle Relief employees in local regions around the world. EVENTS AND CONTESTS This year there are six Zwift ride events with an open or women’s-only option for each event. The Zwift rides will be led by Giant and Liv ambassadors, athletes and employees. All participants will be assigned RLK13 kits during their rides and will be able to unlock the kits upon completion of a ride. Riders will be assigned Giant TCR Advanced SL Disc bikes for the open rides or Liv Langma Advanced SL bikes for the women’s rides. Participants will also earn a chance to win limited edition RLK13 jerseys, signed by King Liu, during each ride. Five jerseys will be given away during each of the six scheduled rides through a random drawing. More jerseys will also be awarded to participants of local outdoor Ride Like King events in their own communities. Employees, retailers and friends of Giant and Liv are encouraged to ride May 14-16, sharing stories and photos on social media channels. To be eligible for prizes, riders can simply post photos from their rides to Facebook or Instagram with the #RideLikeKing hashtag on those dates. I go cycling with my wife. We have had many day trips on bikes over the years. We both enjoy it, but my wife is not as fast as me and probably never will be. I considered getting her an electric bike, but she doesn't want or need a 250W motor and an expensive bulky battery pack. What my wife really wants is a steady 40-50W of power assistance. This would bring her up to my average power output, allowing us to both have a good level of physical exercise while cycling at the same speed together. A low power electrical assist system could be much lighter cheaper and less complicated than a conventional 250W ebike. Unfortunately I can't find one for sale. Would anyone else be interested in such a product?

I had just left my house, on a two-lane road crossing a bridge- no shoulder. A dark blue sedan speeds up from behind trying to pass me before meeting the oncoming car. Ten yards from a red light. She squeezes between me and the other car, over the double yellow line, but not giving my my Oregon 3 feet at all. I met up with her at the light (a T)- she was turning right, I was turning left, so I was right next to her. Tinted windows were up, so I couldn't see anything, but I mouthed "not very much room, right?" She rolled down her window and asked what was my beef. I told her. She said there was car coming! Not yelling, but firmly pointed out that she should have waited. She apologized, angrily. I pointed out that the law was to give cyclists 3 feet, she claimed to be from a different town. I pointed out that it was a state law. She said she apologized, asked what more I wanted... I said that was enough. She was still angry. I wasn't, but my adrenaline was up. I had a great after-work ride, I felt I could keep going for so long, but realized I should get home for dinner. Rant over, thanks for reading, stay safe out there. Stand up for yourself, but don't be a jerk about it. I hope I wasn't too much of one today.

Also ein Freund von mir hat behauptet, dass Freunde von ihm in 24h von Stuttgart nach Berlin gefahren sind. Das sind 650 km und 3,2k höhen Meter (Harzgebirge). Ich fahre selber Rad aber so krass bin ich dann doch nicht. Jetzt frag ich mich: Ist das überhaupt möglich!?!? Mir kam das schon SEHR viel vor. Ich bin jetzt nicht sonderlich trainiert, aber durchschnittlich sportlich und bin mal zum Bodensee von Stuttgart in 14h gefahren und war danach schon relativ kaputt, aber nach Berlin ist ja ein ganz anderes Level. Erzählt der mir ne Seemansgeschichte?

Hallo, ich besitze seit einer Woche ein Fahrrad und möchte meine Wissenslücken in Sachen Fahrradwartung schließen. Bisher habe ich keine Erfahrungen mit Fahrradreifen gemacht. Ich habe ein 26 Zoll Mountainbike von CUBE. Auf der Bereifung steht die Bezeichnung: "26x2.00 50-559". Das bedeutet, dass ich eine 26-zöllige Bereifung mit 2cm Breite brauche, richtig? Kann ich nur Reifen mit der Größenbezeichnung: "50-559 | 26x2.00" verwenden? Irgendwie blicke ich nicht durch. Danke im Voraus.
