Runner wanting to start triathlons. Completely new to biking; though I have been attending indoor spin classes since August. Wanting to cross an Ironman off my bucket list in 2-3 years. After that, we'll see if I keep going or not. A shop is selling a couple of used carbon bikes for less than $2k each, but I'm wondering if it's actually important that I start out with carbon. And I'm wondering if starting on a heavier bike will be a good thing in regard to my fitness. Here is my question: is it OK if I start training on a low end bike or a non-race bike? For example, one local shop is selling a used aluminum 2009 CAAD 9 for $500. I'm also open to getting a new commuter or gravel bike (so that I can get miles in by biking to work). Due to current market conditions, I don't feel comfortable dropping $1.5-2k when I haven't seen many options yet and when haven't even tried out the sport yet. Here's what I'm thinking: go ahead and train on a non-ideal bike NOW for a few reasons: A) to buy myself more time to research before spending over $1k and B) to see if road biking is something I really want to spend 100s of miles doing. C) to get strength training from a heavier bike. <--Does this sound like a good reason? My goals for year 2022: 1) bank lot of miles at an arrow position so that I can more easily transition to a Tri/TT bike in a couple years. 2) Get in good enough shape to find and keep up with a road biking group by this Spring. If you think I CAN meet these goals with a non-ideal bike, would it have to be a regular road bike (like the CAAD 9), or could I get by with putting road wheels on a gravel bike? TLDR; Is it OK for a runner to start his bike training (for triathlons) on a non-race bike (aluminum frame road bike or a carbon bike)? Or will I need a race bike NOW to keep up with bike groups?

Hi. Cycling has always been a great way of leisure time for me. Since I was a little I’ve had the opportunity to cycle to school, tuition or just for fun around the block with my friends and have never been scared of a potential accident and even if I was involved in one then it didn’t prevent me from cycling and here I am talking about the less civilised traffic of india. Even after growing up about 3-4 years ago, I was very confident going to the gym and back on a hybrid bike and was quite good around the traffic on the road. Ever since I moved to the U.K. I wanted to continue the cycling and invested in a road bike but once I lost balance during a rough weather around the kerb(we don’t have many kerbs back home) and since then I have developed the constant fear of being either run over or falling in the middle of the road or being yelled at or just being a problem for others on the road which again makes me conscious and prevents me from enjoying the ride. I’ve had people sitting with me in the car say all sorts of negative stuff about the cyclists we would be driving past and I would imagine the same being targeted at me. I just want to be safe as well as enjoy the ride like I used to when I was back home. Any suggestions from fellow riders and how they would overcome or have had to overcome this fear. Thanks in advance.

Me: 70 years old, 150 lbs/68 kg, avid cyclist for a long time, competitive only with myself. Went for a ride this past Wednesday (today is Monday) with friends - 30-mile chill ride, vigorous not particularly strenuous. Within minutes after starting the ride, I felt what I thought was a muscle strain right down the middle of my left calf. It wasn't that bad, and I was planning on a few rest days over Christmas anyway, so I rode through it. After showering that night, I noticed the left calf was pretty swollen; I attributed it to inflammation from the "pulled muscle." The next morning, the calf was huge - huge enough that I went to urgent care. Urgent care said it was beyond their scope and sent me to the ER. The ER did an ultrasound and determined it was a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I immediately went on an anticoagulant and have an appointment with my doc on Wednesday to determine the path forward. At this point, I dare not ride for fear of what could happen - not just the brain bleeding problem if I were to fall and hit my head badly (I do wear a helmet) - but fear of breaking a clot loose and getting a pulmonary embolism. My fears, this being so new to me, might be irrational but nothing's going to bring me down my wall of worry until I see my doc. I'm getting out and walking 3-4 times a day and am getting up and moving around frequently but I am guessing I could be off the bike for a while. Or not ... I just don't know yet. I prefer riding outdoors whenever possible, but I do Zwift, FulGaz, and Sufferfest when the weather's bad or I want to do a structured workout. My big hope is that the doc will tell me I can ride, even if the rides are moderate to begin with. Out of fear of falling (which actually hasn't happened in years) and hurting myself seriously, I imagine I might be spending a lot more time with Zwift and FulGaz until the DVT is resolved (which I've read could be three months or longer). My questions to you are: how did you deal with it? How long were you off the bike? How long before the DVT was gone? Did you have to undergo long-term treatment? What did your doctor tell you about exercise frequency and intensity? And so on ... I'd appreciate hearing others' experiences, to the extent you're willing to share them!
