I got hit by a car today.

I was riding in a bike lane, along a beach esplanade in Melbourne, Aus. It was the middle of the day, quiet, apart from people walking and getting some fresh air. I was sitting on about 35km/h when a van passes me on the right. Geez, its a 40 zone I thought to myself. I should have thought twice. About 5 seconds later the break lights glare and the van turns left, across the bike lane towards the beach carpark. My stomach dropped as I see this van in front of me. I slam on my breaks, feeling my front tire skid but instinctually let off to stop myself from going OTB. I don't think I fully realised a crash was imminent. I feel the bone-jarring thud as my body hits the side of the van, and then everything else happened too fast to remember. I was in shock, my Garmin beeping furiously and a crowd of people looking at me. The driver got out and was profusely apologizing. Somehow, I was okay. With a small graze on my elbow and my hip throbbing, I managed to stand up. My bike is still in one piece, my bibs and jersey rip free. Of all days, I forgot my phone, but a bloke offered me a lift home. I didn't go out riding today with the slightest worry I'd get into an accident. But being my first, feeling helpless and at the mercy of a metal box on wheels, will make me think twice now. I was lucky today, so many more things could have gone wrong and it served as a reminder that it can happen to anyone. I have a 150km race in a week and I don't know how to feel or what to do. Anyone who has been in a crash, how did you cope? How did you move on and not dwell on it? TLDR: I got hit and want advice moving forward. EDIT: I really appreciate everyone's stories and comments, I don't really have anyone to talk to that understands this situation like you all do.

I'm the one who did 7 miles on a Walmart mountain bike a month or so ago. This is actually my 2nd time doing the 15 mile round trip on my Walmart mountain bike. On asphalt. In below 60 degree weather. Its a genesis v2900 from 8 or so years ago if anyone is wondering. I can't wait to get a proper road bike to do much longer trips and have a better experience!!! I'm going second hand. No I'm not getting a Walmart bike again.
