I am not Charlie and am happy to prove that through a DM. Some bay area folks may know of Charlie through his certifiably insane Strava feats -- last year, he logged 35,846.1 mi in 3042.5hrs on the bike, all while gaining 3,456,788ft of elevation. This past weekend, I heard through a mutual friend that he decided to double everest one of the most brutal sections of road in the south bay -- On Orbit Drive, which is one small part of the much longer but still brutal [Bohlman On Orbit climb.](https://pjammcycling.com/climb/1963.Bohlman-On-Orbit) I believe he used the allowed two hours of sleep for a double everest. The [full segment](https://www.strava.com/segments/8490472?filter=overall) gains 459 feet in 0.65 miles, averaging 13.5% gradient. However, On Orbit is also home to the infamous [Gates of Hell segment](https://www.strava.com/segments/9754730?filter=overall), meaning that 0.22 of those miles are at an average of 16.5% gradient (maxing out over 20%). It appears to have taken somewhere in the neighborhood of 128 laps of On Orbit to get to the correct amount of elevation. Truly amazing.

I was reading the responses to the recent post where someone was asking for advice after hitting a cyclist ([here](https://old.reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/ubyoz4/i_accidentally_hit_a_cyclist_with_my_car/)) and it got me thinking about Jessie Singer's recent book 'There are no accidents'. The basic premise is this: *"We hear it all the time: “Sorry, it was just an accident.” And we’ve been deeply conditioned to just accept that explanation and move on. But as Jessie Singer argues convincingly: There are no such things as accidents. The vast majority of mishaps are not random but predictable and preventable. Singer uncovers just how the term “accident” itself protects those in power and leaves the most vulnerable in harm’s way, preventing investigations, pushing off debts, blaming the victims, diluting anger, and even sparking empathy for the perpetrators."* I've found it a really eye-opening read that's changed how I feel about infrastructure, particularly bike infrastructure. I realise it's not specific to cycling, but given how vulnerable we often are I think it's very relevant. It's also focused on America, but the themes are relevant in many places. Hallo zusammen, ich habe eine Frage an die Bikepacking-Experten unter euch. Ich würde gerne Pfingsten meine erste lange richtig lange Tour mit dem Rennrad durchziehen. Aufgrund von familiären Verpflichtungen habe ich zwei Tage Zeit um 280 km zurückzulegen. Mein Plan ist am Samstag früh zu starten und möglichst viele Kilometer abzureißen, schlafen würde ich dann irgendwo in Büschen mit Biwaksack. Damit habe ich grundsätzlich schon Erfahrungen. Essen wollte ich hauptsächlich unterwegs organisieren, von Supermarkt und Tanke, einige Riegel und Süßkram kommen aber natürlich auch ins Gepäck. Das Problem ist nur, dass ich kaum Gelegenheiten haben werde mich vorher in kleinen Schritten ranzutasten. Meine weiteste Distanz waren bisher 70 km die ich mit einem Schnitt von 30 kmh gefahren bin. Vielleicht schaffe ich vorher auch schon Mal eine Distanz von 120 km. Mehr ist aber aus Zeitgründen kaum drin. Wenn es nicht klappt kann ich immer noch die Bahn nehmen, ich möchte aber schon gerne ein gutes Stück auf eigener Achse fahren. Ist das mit einem entspannten Schnitt zu schaffen, wenn man oben immer genug Mampf nachschiebt oder übernehme ich mich da einfach viel zu krass? Wie sind da eure Erfahrungen im Bezug auf lange Distanzen und durchschnittlicher Fitness?

Hi! Thanks for a great community with lots of great topics and discussions/info! This might be one of those questions that get asked every day, if that's the case I'm sorry! (I've googled but there's not really any info from actual people with experiences comparing the types, I might be really bad at using google though.) So my question is; what is the noticeable difference for people like me (who don't really ride "seriously" as in doing races or 200 mile rides) when it comes to the different "types" of road bike? For example aero, race, endurance, (touring?) and what not? I mean, for somebody like me that doesn't really ride in a way that I would need something really "special", would I benifit from using a certain type of road bike? Would choosing the wrong type actually do more harm than good? Or could I basically choose one that I think "looks cool/good" within a set budget? What are your experiences using different types of road bikes? Pros and cons? Why do you use that specific type right now? Thank you!

I would consider myself an "experienced beginner". I got into cycling about 3 years ago, started on a Trek Dual Sport 2 w/ Shimano Acera. Was riding about 60 miles a week pretty consistently, started educating myself on bike tech, following people in the sport, and just generally falling in love with cycling. About 8 months ago I decided to upgrade and bought a Giant Revolt Advanced, full carbon frame, Shimano GRX-400 from my local bike shop. I have had nothing but frustration and disappointment since. Right out the gate, the bike was awful. The shifting was flat out un-rideable. It would work fine for like 80 miles, then the problems would start. Skipping gears, clunky shifting, hitting the shifter and just nothing happening, sometimes the front derailer would just stop working - anything and everything shifting related seemed to be going wrong. I would take it back to the LBS, they'd throw it on the stand for 20 minutes and give it back to me, and then it would be fine for the next 80 miles until the problems started all over again. I've repeated this process about 5 times in the course of 8 months. Now I'm fully aware I didnt purchase full dura-ace Di2, I know GRX-400 isn't anything top of the line, but I was riding a Trek DS worth a third of the price of my current bike and I NEVER had these problems. I started getting really frustrated. I explained my frustrations to my LBS, and they basically said I probably just don't know how to ride a road bike. Okay, fair enough. I haven't been riding THAT long, it is entirely possible that I have no idea what I'm doing. The LBS owner said let's go for a ride, and I'll watch you. So I set off like a toddler learning to ride his bike while the LBS owner watched me, only for him to hop and realize - oh, yeah this bike isn't shifting. So what did he do? He put it on the stand for 20 minutes and said it's good to go. So guess where I'm at now? Sitting here typing this on reddit because my $2.5k bike is currently un-rideable. So, this is my ask to all of you. Are my expectations just not realistic? Is this just the reality of owning a slightly higher end bike? Does this sound like something inherently wrong with the bike? If something is wrong with it, or hell even if I've broken something, I don't care I'll fix it. I'll pay whatever to fix it. I just cannot determine if my bike is defective, if I'm a bad rider, or if my LBS just isn't cutting it. Maybe it's some combination. I do have a number of other reasons to be more than unhappy with my LBS though. When I bought the bike they didn't even bother to do any type of fitting, so I was confused why my butt was unbearably sore after 10 miles even with the $150 bib shorts my LBS sold me. Took spending $300 on an independent bike fitting to figure that one out. I feel like just because I didn't buy a s-works tarmac sl7 that my LBS just won't give me the time of day. I'm at the point where I just want to sell this bike, and it's gotten me seriously discouraged from cycling.
