I need a little sanity check here, because there’s been something driving me absolutely bananas the last few months. For context, I am a young(ish) (mid 20s) female rider. I usually ride with a group. Sometimes as we’re riding we’ll pick up the occasional solo rider who rides with us for a bit, drafts in the group, and makes some light chit chat before heading their separate way. Totally cool. Recently, I’ve been riding on my own a lot more. I live in an area well known for road biking and so there’s a solid chance you’ll run across another cyclist on your ride. Usually they’re headed in the opposite direction and we give the obligatory head nod. However, I’ve recently been noticing that random riders (always men) will come up behind me and start drafting right off my back wheel, insanely close with no warning, hello, or “hey is this cool”. They’ll draft off me for 5-10 miles of back country roads saying literally nothing and never offering to pull while my heart rate is going 200 bpm, not only because I’m pulling the whole time, but also because I’m pretty sure there’s a 50/50 shot I end up on an episode of Dateline with Keith Morrison narrating my untimely death. Hence forcing me to bike as fast as humanly possible to see if I can drop them. Eventually, we’ll hit a traffic light or a stop sign. If I’m feeling exceptionally spooked, I will usually pull out my phone and pretend to make a call and they’ll keep going on their own. Otherwise, I just keep riding and hope they turn another direction or sometimes I end up dropping them and they just fall back. For some reason it really freaks me out that I’m riding with a random person I’ve never met before in a sparsely populated area with limited cell reception. I’ve told some of my male friends about this and they told me I need to be more friendly. But I wanted to come here to see if I’m being completely unreasonable. Is there anything I can do to make myself feel more comfortable?

I work in a bike shop. I’ve worked in many bike shops over the years. I have raced road, CX, MTB, track, etc. I have worked as a mechanic for teams. In short, I have a fair amount of experience with bikes. Two days ago, a guy came into our shop looking for a tube. One of our employees helped him out and he was for no reason, somewhat condescending to her. The guy was getting a 20” tube and didn’t know the exact width but used his fingers to give an approximation. The woman helping asked if he wanted the larger or smaller width (we had two widths in stock) and he insinuated it was a stupid question and he obviously wanted the narrower width. The width ranges of the two tubes overlapped. Between that and his less than scientific “hand pantomime” measurement, it was an absolutely valid question. 45 minutes later, he returns with a punctured tube. He claims we sold him a faulty tube and demands a replacement. Looking at the tube, it is pretty clear he pinched it. I explain to him that this was probably user error and I can’t give him a free tube. We do have a policy of selling a replacement tube at a discount if this sort of thing happens because, hey, this sort of thing happens! He is insistent that he could not have possibly made an error. He tells me he has been changing tubes for “forty years and has never popped a tube once!”. He leaves. The next day (yesterday), he comes back with the wheel to prove it was not his fault. The wheel in question is a single wall, badly in need of new rim tape. It may have caused the puncture, it may not. It proved nothing but, the rim marks on the tube line up exactly where you would expect a pinched tube to fail and not on a seam or near the valve which are common spots for a faulty tube to fail. I explain that the wheel proves nothing, I will not give him a free tube but the discount off stands. He actually tried to stare me down for a good 60 seconds before finally just buying a new tube, at a discount. This guy came in, didn’t know what he wanted, was condescending towards a female employee, implied he knew more about changing tubes than me and was generally a total dick (side note, this guy is a regular and is always a bit of a dick). I just want to say two things: First, if a tube pops when you inflate it, 99% of the time it’s user error. It happens to all of us. Messing up a tube installation happens, even for people who are good at it. I have changed literally thousands of tubes in my lifetime, possibly tens of thousands. If I were to inflate a tire and hear a pop, my first instinct is “oh, I fucked up”, not, “the tube is bad!”. Bad tubes are out there for sure but it’s almost ALWAYS the person. Second, don’t be a dick. Honestly, if that guy were nice, treated the staff counterspy’s, I probably would have just given him a new tube. This guy was gearing up like he was going to battle over an $8 piece of rubber. Save that energy for something that matters. Anyway, rant over, just needed to get this shitty energy out of my head and into some text. Apologies to anyone who wasted two minutes of their life reading this!
