My worst bonk: Ditch Pepsi.

I thought you all might appreciate this story from a few years back… So I borrowed a demo bike from the shop I was working at. Decided to take it out for a super quick ride one morning. I was planning on maybe 5 miles. Didn’t eat anything or bring any water… just my bibs and jersey. The bike was so fun I ended up just keeping on going. It was right when the new Specialized Roubaix came out with the Future shock. And it was my first time riding Di2. At the time I lived at the top of a mountain, and the descents were sooo fun. That bike descended so well, as I wasn’t getting chattered much from the shitty road surface. So I ended up about 15-20 miles from home…. And it was all uphill back. So I started pedaling back and with like 10 miles to go I was absolutely spent. This was right before the 2016 election in rural NY state. There were trump flags all over and Obama sucks spray painted on the roads. No joke. So I wasn’t feeling so comfortable stopping at someone’s house to ask for water in my Peter Pan suit. Bonking so hard I couldn’t see straight. I’m literally thinking about eating pine cones and grass. Seriously, I’m never thought about that before and I was considering how bad it would be. Or asking someone for some water and a slice of bread. Anything. I was just spinning In my lowest gear. Super Dizzy. I pull over to the side of the road at the bottom of the last climb to my house. It’s hot. And I’m just laying in a ditch. No one stops… In the ditch I see a sun bleached bottle of Pepsi… Probably a 1/3rd of a bottle left. I crawl over to it. Unscrew the top. Totally flat. It’s probably been here for months. But it doesn’t smell like piss or dip spit or anything… So I chug that fucker. Warm flat ditch Pepsi! I literally have never felt the effects of sugar so quickly before! I almost instantly felt better. Like I had my special meter return to full. I could feel the energy returning to me. It was wild. I’ve never since felt that sort of replenishment. It was amazing. I hopped out of the ditch. And pedaled the climb back home. And honestly I didn’t do to bad on the way back.I felt great! I probably have herpes from the ditch Pepsi. But it saved me. And now I know to always eat and bring at least a gel with me for any sort of rides I do. Thanks ditch Pepsi!

Tips for getting up really steep climbs ?

I've approach to a place where there are a lot of beaten paths that are really steep. According to my garmin, They are between 20 and 25%, so really steep. In fact there are signs for cars not to go up said paths. I'm ⠀not very experienced with such steep inclines, usually the max I go is 15-17%. I am finding it really hard to maintain control going up said hill. I'm doing these hills on my XC full suspension bike, in my granny gear (34/51). I can get up just fine, however I am struggling with keeping both wheels down. If I pedal too hard, the front lifts up, and I feel like I'm holding on for dear life, otherwise my butt will slip off the seat. Any tips and tricks I should keep in mind? I'm trying to get as low as I can to the handlebars but It doesnt help much. I was thinking of actually inverting my stem from +7% to -7%. Would that help?

Hin und wieder kommen Leute zu mir und behaupten, dass mein Sattel ja viel zu hoch sei und ich ja gar nicht auf dem Boden komme um mich abzustützen wenn ich mal anhalten muss. Nun, mein Sattel ist so eingestellt, dass das Pedalieren keine falschen Belastungen ausübt und so, dass mein Bein komplett durchstreckt wenn die Ferse auf der unteren Pedale steht. Es gibt möglicherweise Räder, dort kann man entspannt den Fuß auf den Boden stellen, bei meinem MTB oder dem Trekkingrad meiner Frau ist das aber absolut nicht der Fall. Gerade erst bei Facebook eine Fahrrad-Werbung gesehen. Es waren auch dort Kommentare dabei wie:"Ihr habt gar keine Ahnung von Fahrrädern, man sieht eindeutig, dass der Sattel zu hoch ist. Die Dame auf dem Foto würde im Stand gar nicht auf dem Boden ankommen." Wie seht ihr das? Haben diese Leute selbst keine Ahnung? Für mich ist eher der Sattel zu niedrig oder das Fahrrad zu klein wenn man auf dem Boden ankommt.

Has anyone successfully kept cycling, after suffering knee pain from this? I have a goal, and desperately want/am going to keep biking and push through the pain… any tips that worked for this? I’ve found some exercises/PT to do at home, and am planning on getting a sports massage every week or so, but ugh I don’t want the pain to slow me down! ETA: This goal is INCREDIBLY important to me… it has been in the works for over a year. It’s riding 71 miles, with my 70 year old dad, who had heart surgery in January. This is one of those things that if I couldn’t do it/gave up, I would never forgive myself. I can’t put it off, because the man has had a litany of health issues, I’m not sure if the opportunity will be around in the Spring or next year, if you catch my drift… we need to do it. Also, I’ve had my fair share of hip issues before, growing up at a dance studio doing weird things to my body and pushing through collegiate championships… so fairly positive this is stemming from my hip, and I’ve seen my Athletic Trainer that helped me through those times. The pain is by no means constant/consistent or even bad. I’m trying to nip it in the bud before it becomes a big problem… so the clam things and exercises/stretching/rolling/massage gun regimens- I will definitely be trying out!! Thank you for taking the time to read and respond!!!

Ich brauche zum Sehen grundsätzlich eine Brille. Fahrrad fahre ich mit Helm. Bei gutem Wetter ist das kein Problem. Aber ich habe mir vorgenommen, zukünftig auch mal bei schlechteren Wetter mit dem Rad die 7km zur Arbeit zu fahren. Aber ich weiß nicht, wie ich das mit Regen und der Brille mache. Früher hab ich gelegentliche kurze Strecken (1-2km) ohne Helm mit nem Cappy gemacht - das geht dann so einigermaßen. Aber auf dem Weg zur Arbeit ist mir das ohne Helm zu gefährlich. Habt ihr nen Geheimtipp was ich tun kann? Bisher hab ich mich nicht groß gekümmert, mir ist nur ne „Überbrille“ als Idee eingefallen (quasi sowas was man bei handwerklichen Tätigkeiten nutzt). Aber taugt das was? Danke.

Kurze Frage, vllt auch eher interessant für die Chemiker/Physiker unter euch: Ist es wirklich gefährlich seinen Helm zu bekleben, weil dann die Oberflächenspannung leiden und die Funktion beeinträchtigt werden kann? Mein Sohn und ich haben so reflektierende Sticker (Universal, aber vor allem für Helm gedacht) geschenkt bekommen, die ich vor allem für den Kleinen sehr cool finde, weil sie die Sichtbarkeit grundsätzlich erhöhen, z.B. wenn mal die Leuchte am Helm nicht an ist und es aber schon dunkler wird. Er mag die Motive und kann es kaum abwarten, seinen Helm zu bekleben. Jetzt steht allerdings an vielen Stellen im Netz, vor allem auch bei den Herstellern vieler Helme, dass man Helme nie bekleben solle, weil dann die Schutzfunktion womöglich beeinträchtigt sein kann (Oberflächenspannung, etc.).
