10. Oktober, 12:48 Uhr

This might catch some hate, but it's something that has really been bothering me for some time and I feel I need to get some conversation moving. I constantly see posts in here and have discussions with riding friends about upgrading components not being "cost effective," about buying a completely new bike every 2 years, about having 4, 5, or more bikes. It makes be wonder how many of us have sat down and really contemplated the environmental impact behind these decisions. I'm not saying we should all be riding around on decades-old framesets, but I also think that before completely upgrading to a new bike we should consider less environmentally impactful ways of improving our experience. Do we honestly need to buy a new bike just because Specialized promo-ed the new Aethos at our local shop or would a new saddle and wheelset scratch our itch? The vast majority of us are not going to have a poor race season because we didn't get entirely clapped out in new kit and a new frameset at the beginning of the season. Hell, most of the community is lucky to grab the occasional Strava trophy on their weekly group ride. This has come more sharply into focus for me over the last couple of years as so many people have entered into the sport we all love. I see people constantly chasing that newest carrot Canyon or Shimano have dangled in front of us. It all feels kind of gross for a community that should, realistically, give even half as much of a fuck as most of the rest of the outdoor community.

my bike was stolen from outside my lecture hall on monday the 26th. i was devastated!! it was my dad’s first, a 2002 giant rincon. love it to death— put a cargo rack & basket on it for utility around campus, rode some half centuries on it a couple years ago. i was crushed when i saw it gone! the lock was still there, so i think i just had dumbass moment and didn’t lock it correctly thru the frame & didnt catch the wheel. well, on thursday the 6th i saw someone riding it! right outside where it was stolen! now, i’m a tiny woman so i just yelled at him, but didn’t chase or get physical. put in another report with the police. a few hours later i got a call they found it!! didn’t find the perp, though. it was found at a bike rack on campus, so i think he dumped it since i caught him with it. there’s been a lot of bike thefts on campus, so i’m really glad that these reports are being taken seriously and resolved. the officer who found my bike was originally looking for a different one! just some good news for you all. bike theft is devastating. (i have an airtag on it now. and a widget on my home screen showing me it’s location at all times… lol)

U.a. I am trying to get creative with some of the things I buy at the store as I prepare for some longer rides. Gels and bars made specifically for cycling seem to have a bit of a financial premium built in (I’m open to this being an emotional response grounded more in contrarianism rather than fact). I am in search of people’s input into some products that may be available in a regular grocery store aisle that people have found efficient for carb intake during long rides. So far, I have found little guava pastes that come in packs of 10 for like $1.87. They are a little skimpy and only have like 14 carbs/60 calories per item, so I’m not totally satisfied with what I’ve settled on. Good financially but a little slim on the carb load. Wondering if anyone has anything they’d want to share? Always down to try and save a few bucks here and there.
