Been riding bikes since forever, BMX for the majority of my life. I’ve always hated wearing helmets mostly because they are “lame”. Well I’ve been riding a road bike for about 2 years now and I recently got a budget MIPS helmet, Bell Falcon!, due to the requirements for some group rides I signed up for. Fast forward to today..... Heading down the road, uphill at 24-25mph (not that fast most of the time just always challenge myself on this particular hill) and next thing you know a car pulls out from a side street to cross the road I’m heading down. A bit of a panic and I swerve and pedal faster to try to avoid collision. Car hits my rear tire and slams me to the ground extremely hard. I walk away from the accident scraped up!!! The helmet, which I almost didn’t wear due to my hairstyle after work, saved my head from major injury and maybe worse. I grew up riding BMX and playing ice hockey so I took many, many hard slams and I think today I hit my head harder than ever. The helmet took the impact like a pro. It hurt my jaw a bit where it rolled over on my face upon impact, but it split in several places and saved me. I am still shell-shocked a bit, but I truly believe that I would not be posting this if I didn’t wear my helmet tonight. Helmets aren’t cool, but after tonight I WILL NEVER AGAIN RIDE WITHOUT MY HELMET ON. I couldn’t imagine the shape I’d be in without it. Shout out to Bell helmets!!!

I just got into cycling this spring. I’ve been going on 10-15 mile rides the past four weeks on a road bike on some really nice trails along the river behind the house. My partner’s dad, who lives about 2.5 hours away is really into cycling and invited me to join him and a few of his friends to ride a half century this Sunday. I’m really excited about doing it, but was a little nervous because I haven’t ridden anywhere near that far. So, I have today off and decide I’m going to try to do 50 miles with my free morning. I get going and everything is feeling good. I hit a bit of a wall around mile 25, but I pushed through and by mile 30 I knew I’d be able to finish. My goal became to finish in under four hours. At mile 38, I got a flat. I’m still new to cycling and I don’t carry spare tubes or a patch kit. My tubes have sealant so I pumped it back up and hoped it would hold. I passed the turn home at mile 42 and tried to push four more miles to turn around. I turned around at 46 and pumped again. At mile 48.5 I had to stop and pump again... and it wouldn’t hold air. I had to walk the last mile and a half home. I was crushed. But, when I got home I realized it just means I’ll get to hit that’s milestone for the first time this Sunday with my future father in law and I learned some lessons. Always carry a patch kit. Always carry a couple of new tubes. Accept the help of passing cyclists and offer help to other cyclists who might be in trouble. tldr; got a flat and didn’t finish my first 50, but I’m really excited about my future with cycling.

Long story short, my brand new Trek FX2 disc that I bought assembled by my LBS was stolen. First time I bought myself a real bike. Loved it. Heartsick. There's a small chance it will still surface, yet I also want to move on and have a bike I can ride. And now I've got this bug to work on bikes, to ride fast, and to get my family out with me on occasion. Maybe ride to work some days (\~10 mi). The hybrid was pretty good for all of these things, but I suspect eventually I'm going to want a real road bike. That said, I've really only gotten out a several times since I got the new (stolen) bike, so this might be wishful thinking. I'm thinking that for the price of replacing my old hybrid, I can probably order and assemble a decent road bike even though I've never done that before. (Too optimistic?) I used to do my own maintenance, and I can usually handle fairly complicated hobby builds (used to build RC helicopters). I'm no auto mechanic or home DIY person though (I can do basic things like brakes, oil, lights, stereo; basic electronics, assembly, appliance repair). I'm writing for sanity-checking and any input folks might have. Here's my thought process: * I'm assuming I can still take my family out even if I have a road bike and they all have hybrids for now (I plan to get my youngest, age 7, a trek precaliber 20 or 24 so she can keep up better). But solo, I can tuck and go. * Find a bike that gets good reviews in the $350 - $800 range. Example brands could be schwinn, vilano, motobecane, gravity, tomasso * Get a drop bar road bike that also has grips on the top of the bar, e.g., flared drop bar * Once, I thought it was all about the frame. I'm realizing it might actually be more about the components * I loved the feel of the hydraulic disc brakes on the Trek FX. It just feels like the right mechanics. I have never liked rim brakes even when there were no alternatives. Now I'm stuck on this idea of disc breaks. I prefer hydraulic, but road bikes with hydraulic brakes are so expensive. Seems like I got a hybrid with them for $600, but a road bike with them is closer to 2k for some reason. It looks like I could get one with mechanical disc brakes and that would be close enough (maybe better in the heat?), plus have the correct attachment points on the frame so I could swap them out for hydraulic if I really want to later. I think that would be a fun project and I'd already have the wheels and discs. * I'm assuming that if I'm going to stay hung up on disc breaks, I'm probably looking for a new bike. * I like the concept of a "gravel" bike. It's a new concept to me, but seems like a road bike with wider tires, which can also be swapped for narrower tires. Seems like with disc brakes, the clearance isn't an issue, so it's basically the same bike either way, just vary the tires for the purpose. I don't intend to go off road, but sometimes need to cut corners, etc. I live in FL. Don't need a mountain bike. Have a 20 mile paved bike trail nearby and pretty good access to suitable streets and sidewalks. * I'm thinking I ought to be able to get an aluminum frame road bike with decent components and disc brakes and assemble it myself for about the price I'd pay for an assembled Trek hybrid from my LBS like the one that was stolen. Or maybe this is all just rationalization for not having to just go out and buy my same freaking bike again. I wanted to buy the one I did from our LBS because I was new to all of this and just wanted it done right. But if I can have the satisfaction of assembling my own bike, and thus also knowing how to maintain and tweak it myself, and end up with more bike than I had, or something comparable for less money, then somehow I think I'll feel better about the loss, like it would have served a purpose. ​ The alternative in my mind is just get the same dang bike again, or maybe upgrade slightly to the Trek FX3 disc. I just don't love the color of the current model (red or black with red trim; I prefer white, black, or blue, and apparently am OK with bright yellow). And throwing more $ at the same thing again feels hard to swallow even though I realize it's not rational. And then I have the same bike as the jerk who took mine and I have to explain to everyone that no I didn't get my bike back I just bought the same one again because I'm a sucker. ​ This is probably way too long!
