I have depression, so my mind is constantly telling me to kill myself because life sucks and it's not worth living at all. BUT, when I am riding a bicycle, hell yeah, it feels so good! It really makes me start loving life. I don't have any special expensive sportsy kind of bicycle. It's an ordinary road bike. No suspensions. I got it a long time ago when I was a kid, but it was too big for me back then. I am 25 years old now. So it's quite old as well, but it's going very well. I am going uphills, downhills, on unpaved roads through the woods, using it to the max, and it's still great. I live in a very hilly area, so it is impossible to avoid climbing. But what I love about it is that I get a downhill afterwards as a well earned reward. What I love especially is the beautiful nature! Forests, rivers. There is a small waterfall that I like to sit by and rest for a bit. No bad thoughts coming to my mind then! I am not an athletic type of guy and not into sports like football etc. But, cycling is the best sport ever! Every day I am getting better at climbing those hills, and who knows what could become of me in the future, so that's what makes me stop thinking about suicide and stuff. Also, you don't need friends to cycle. I don't have any, I've got myself and the nature. Thanks to this subreddit and all you guys. It's been nice to read all the posts by like-minded people. Now I decided to make an account and tell my little story.

for me it is the Garmin radar taillight. second would be di2, both are products that you absolutely do not need but immensely add to the enjoyment of riding. The Garmin because it has shown me cars I didn't even know were there and gives me a heads up long before they are close and prepares me for them to either honk or pass close, both are much more bearable if you know they are coming. Di2...just because.

Yesterday I had the novel idea to go on a casual bike ride; wearing a pair of shorts, a pair of crocs, and a pair of Beats by Dre in lieu of a bike helmet (I'm an idiot, I know). As I went down the way, my usual route, the August heat got worse and worse till it was nearly unbearable. In an attempt to get to shade quickly, I hastened my pace. Along the way, and in my usual careless fashion, I struck a raised crack in the sidewalk at full tilt. My right croc slipped from the pedal and was snagged into the brake mechanism. The front tire then screeched to a complete halt, I was hurled into the air. The whole bike flipped upside down, struck the ground, then slumped over on its side. All that, and in a matter of seconds. If you can recall what I was wearing at the time, it is needless to say that I was not without injury. Thankfully, and almost miraculously, my head was spared damage; however, my palms, legs, and feet were not. I bled on the sidewalk for a good two minutes, in that killing heat, completely immobile and helpless. I must have looked insane, flailing on my back with one croc on and the other snagged up in my front tire. *Was I dead? Was I paralyzed? But what the hell just happened?* I heard the questions of passerby and stopped cars that I had no capacity to answer. i finally wobbled to my feet, by which point the concerned witnesses had dispersed. Now, when I say my croc was "snagged up" I mean it was totally stuck between my brake and front tire. No matter what I did I could not dislodge it. Consequently, my front wheel was completely jammed; just stiff as a board. My phone was nowhere to be found. My water bottle had cracked open and leaked everywhere. After a moments of hazy reasoning, I finally said,"To hell with it, I guess I'll just have to drag this damn thing home." This was my only choice, and it proved no easy task. With an immobile front tire, I gripped one handlebar, rested the other on my shoulder and went along as if rolling a wheelbarrow. I was forced to walk over the thin strip of grass between the sidewalk and highway, considering that the concrete burned the sole of my bare (and bleeding) right foot horribly. After what seemed like hours of labor; pain and exhaustion ultimately got the better of me. I finally collapsed. Bleeding, bruised, and thirsty, I just laid there for a damned long time, largely ignored by the cars and pedestrians who happened to pass by and soon began wondering if death could really be all that bad. Finally, and not a moment too soon, a cop came to the rescue. The initial, alarming thought was that I was a hit and run case baking in the sun, or the victim of a heat stroke, but cold water brought me back to my senses and I was able to explain my situation. I was escorted home, finally, and my bike was brought home shortly thereafter. My injuries have so far remained minor and treatable (though picking gravel and dirt out of them was tedious), and my phone was thankfully found and returned. As for my right croc, it is in my brake to this day (and probably will not be removed without the aid of a large pair of box cutters). My ultimate warning, reader, is this: never, never, never, never, and I mean NEVER wear crocs and go biking. The consequences can be quite severe. If anyone would disagree, I'd refer them to this horrible tale.
