Just did my first [??] miles ride

Today I went for a minimalist ride with zero tracking for the first time in a good while. I truly have no idea how far I went (not far) or how fast (not very). All in all that feels pretty neat. It was nice to be reminded that the enjoyment of cycling is not dependent on equipment. I have been heavily into road cycling the last few years and own several bikes. My main one has a power meter and when I don't feel like riding outside I am riding indoors on my fancy direct drive trainer. I usually get annoyed if I forget to strap on the heart rate monitor that I've got paired to the cycling computer that I bring on every ride. My performance and wattage on the bike is nothing special, but my mediocrity is not for a lack of a full lycra kit and heart of a junk mile hero. Yesterday I bought a really banged up steel frame fixie with drop bars on the cheap. The kind of banged up bike you don't feel bad about keeping outside. The idea behind the purchase is as simple as the bike: a no frets A to B mode of transportation with a bare minimum of upkeep. But aside from the shape it's in and the absurdly large frame, it actually feels pretty nice to ride. And even looks kinda cool – from a distance. After sorting out some tasks at work the sunny weather looked mighty compelling from my desk. I felt like going for a ride. So without changing out of the dress shirt I was wearing tucked into a pair of black cords, I put my helmet on and slung my leg over the top tube of my molested mule of an unshiny steed and steered headfirst into the brisk wind and sunshine. This experience was about as minimal as they come: one gear, no GPS-tracking and zero data to be collected and sold by surveillance capitalist corporations. I am not hanging up my bib shorts, getting rid of my power meter or swearing of ERG mode sessions on the trainer any time soon – but this totally unquantified ride was definitely enjoyable in other ways than my usual rides. And I can very much recommend any one to try it.

Hybrid to Roadbike with NO REGRETS

So, I have been owning a Hybrid bike for over 4 years now (road bike body with Shimano Sora and flat handlebar). To be honest, I haven't been actively riding before this year. The road bike was bought to 'accompany my friend for rides', basically, nothing serious. But since the pandemic, I have been riding a lot. Just in the month of July this year alone, I've ridden more than the entire time I own the hybrid bike (I know it's probably nothing compared to many nice and friendly cyclists here, but I'm definitely mighty proud of myself). I was averaging a ride every 2-3 days. August was even more insane. And this active riding made me realise a few things. 1. I was really struggling with this entry hybrid bike at climbs, which made me realise I need to work on my fitness. 2. It made me re-discover the neighbourhood which I grew up in having moved from a matured part of this neighbourhood to a new part of it. I started appreciating the beauty around this neighbourhood. 3. I started venturing into places I never thought I would with a bike. I started to see the urbanscape in a different light and pace, 4. I realised I CAN DO IT. I hit my first 50 with this bike. Not an incredible milestone to shout but I'm just proud I could do it all because I had this severe back problem that has me doubting myself whether I could do the distance. 5. I had a much stronger will than I thought. As mentioned, my back problems hindered me to do a lot of things, and with this bike, I realised I'm pushing boundaries, exploring places, making new friendships, learning so much more from cyclists around me and from people here. That said. all these realizations made me consider getting a better hybrid bike. I was initially considering a better hybrid bike, one with better Shimano groupset, lighter weight. And the reason for this consideration is because I've learnt a lot on how a better road bike coupled with the different gear and training regime can help me maximise my new found passion. As to why I initially wanted to get a hybrid bike is simply because of my back. I had strong concerns because I wasn't able/allowed to go too low while riding, and it would have a disastrous impact on my back. After alot of research, conversations, and contemplation, I took a leap of faith and went with an Endurance road bike. I had my first ride with the road bike yesterday and all I can say is that, I have no regrets. It took less effort to achieve the distance and speed, be it climb or sprint and I'm totally loving it. It's not an easy decision because this bike cost quite a bit, and I'm glad it didn't disappoint (or I'll have some explanation to do to my wife =p). I know, I merely took one ride to reach that preliminary conclusion but I'm sure some would understand when I say, I'm already in love with my new road bike.

I just did my first 20 miles!

I've been knocking out 10 mile runs pretty consistently lately and wanted to push myself. I figure if I can do a 10 mile round trip then I can do 10 in a straight line, and then force myself to come back again. I checked a map for a good destination, and found the local library is a clean 10.0 miles from here. I planned yesterday, prepped my bike, doubled up on water bottles, and set out this afternoon. So a mistake was made in setting out so late. I'd intended to leave shortly after getting up, but I woke up to a dead phone, as it had come off the charger, so I had to wait for that. My second mistake was too much breakfast. A lesson I failed to learn twice before. Protein load the night AFTER. Not before. Should have gone with carbs, but the leftover chicken was too appealing. I probably lost a fair amount of power to digestion, and the hat did not help. I did not puke though. Well I also made the mistake of ignoring directions and instead taking the cycling trail when I reached town (most of the distance is rural roads just getting to downtown), and that ended up spitting me out in an unfamiliar neighborhood, and by the time I found the main road I'd actually overshot the library by a good bit, and had to backtrack. By the time I made it I'd put 4 more miles on my odometer. This would later turn into a happy accident. After a 30 minute rest, and grabbing some gatorade I started the return trip. It was cooler now but my legs were spent from hilly backroads. I had to limp in granny gear for a while before I got back into my rhythm. Things were starting to go well, aside from one semi that buzzed me within 1 foot (and had covered up his how's my driving number). But then I see I'm at 0.4 miles from rolling over to 20. I hear the dreaded flapping sound of a flat tire. I pull over and find it is indeed flat. I grab my frame pump begging the universe, God almighty, and the great spirits of cyclists past to please hold air long enough for this little less than half a mile roll downhill. Success. I desperately mount, and ride to where there is conveniently a little corner store, and call my wife (because it's now too dark to patch a tube on the road side and I did not bring spare tubes). I tell my wife "The good news is I cracked 20 miles. The bad news is I have a flat, can you come and get me?" So that's how a dirtier 20 than I would have liked happened. My legs are burning, and had a couple of cramps since then, but it's a new accomplishment, and it feels great to beat my previous best.
