First (Metric) Double Century

Sorry I know there are a ton of these "my first...." posts, but I yesterday hit a personal target I've been working towards this year, my first metric double century (205.75km to be exact) and this sub seems to be, for the most part, super supportive so wanted to share to maybe give you some encouragement if you're also working to increase your ride distances. ​ For context, I bought my first road bike in mid-May (got lucky with the right bike at the right time for the right price) and completely fell in love. My first ride was a pretty slow 40km and I was destroyed after, so I've had to really build a solid base of fitness. My industry is basically screwed so I've been able to ride 3/4 times a week since, which has been an absolute lifesaver for my mental and physical health and I managed to get to 100km rides pretty quickly. The double century was something that I was determined to get in the bag before end of the outdoor riding season (which is probably weeks away here) though, so I went for it yesterday. ​ The first 100kms were some of the best I've ever ridden and the second 100kms were some of the hardest. The side wind that I rolled with for the first 3/4 hours (and was forecast to have on my route home) shifted around to be a strong headwind for last 90-100km of the ride, which really sapped all my energy/morale. I was on my own so no opportunities to draft and get a breather, there were some dark moments, but being able to listen to tunes on the path/trail sections was a godsend. I was sitting at around 29km/h average at half way but with the headwind and large section of gravel trail that was down to 27.1km/h by the end, but still very happy with that. ​ Strava map - [https://imgur.com/a/iabo6Wt](https://imgur.com/a/iabo6Wt) ​ Nutrition-wise (since I know that question comes up a lot on these threads) I tried to be as self-sufficient as possible since I was riding solo. I carried some mini chicken/rice wraps, some homemade energy balls (oats/flax/peanut butter/honey/raisins), dates, peacans, pack of clif blocks, some regular gummies and went through 5/6 bottles of water (couple with BCAA, couple with electrolyte tablets) and a couple of tactical espressos along the way. Ate a giant smoked meat poutine when I got back to the city and then passed out hour 12 hours, which was by far the best part. Feeling a little stiff today, but no worse than I felt after than first ride back in May, which is crazy to think how adaptable our bodies can be. ​ Now to spend winter on the trainer so I can get that time down next season! Tires make a huge difference

Now that it's fall in New England, the roads are all lined with [wet leaves and pine needles.](https://imgur.com/a/3miITkf) A few of my rides got super sketchy because that's one thing my tires don't handle well. I've been running 28c Continental GP5000's all year and they have been fantastic otherwise. Descents and climbing out of the saddle have become problematic So I changed to my almost brand new 28c Continental GP 4 Seasons. MUCH better with the current road conditions, they felt great. But thanks to Strava's matched rides feature, I noticed I went quite a bit slower despite putting in more effort, and not putting in much effort at all into the other ride (easy zone 2 spin) on the 5000's. So I did the same ride again yesterday, but really upped the effort. And still fell short. Here is a comparison. This ride is about 28 miles with about 1500 feet of elevation gain: [https://imgur.com/a/Z59XMPP](https://imgur.com/a/Z59XMPP) 9/27 - GP5000's - 1:39:49 (16.6mph average, relative effort was 103) 10/11 GP 4 Seasons 1:43:39 (16.0mph average, relative effort was 123) Yesterday GP 4 Seasons 1:41:28 (16.3mph, 161 relative effort, zone 3 and 4, touching z5 on some climbs) And despite some initial soreness in the first 5 miles yesterday, I felt pretty good! But that was a lot more effort to go slower all just because of tires. That's the only thing that has changed. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Last week I did my first 75 km ride. I’ve never ridden anything but a mountain bike up til now, and it took my 3 hrs 20 min. I was able to borrow a road bike from a local shop today and did the ride again. Same ride took me 2 hrs 40 min. I think I could’ve gotten it down to 2 hrs 15 if not for the 30 km head wind I had for a majority of the ride. I know none of this comes as a shock to you road bikers, but it was cool to me to see how much of a difference the bike makes.

Chain the Ripper

I have to say of all the issues you can run into cycling, breaking the chain is my absolute favorite one. Today on my way to work it was the second time in twenty years I managed to rip a chain. Nothing is more satisfying then calling the wife and saying, "Honey my training seems to be working out fantastically I just ripped my bike chain literally to shreds" That isn't the only satisfaction you get from braking your chain, oh no. You now can wear for the next month the "Chain the Ripper" badge and everyone knows that's like pinstripes on a car it gives you a minimum of two thousand watt sprint power extra. Which means in the upcoming group rides or crit races you will be automatically given the win because who wants to take on a beast like you. Now since I am not just a mere mortal on a short trip to hercul strengths I did not just rip a standard chain. Oh no sir, I as a god walking among men ripped a gold chain. So I am wearing proudly now the "Gold Chain the Ripper" badge. With this type of badge one could just go and pick up the wins for all grand tours without even participating. The strength one has can not be measured in watt's anymore. You will get calls from NASA to pedal the next rocket into space. It is just cheaper to feed you than to pay for the rocket fuel. In addition should one of these insignificant mortals actually dare to challenge you in your moment of glory and should you by bad fortune of course, lose such a challenge fear not my friend as you have endless excuses built into your badge of honor. I was afraid I would rip this chain too so I couldn't give it my all. I am still a little fatigue from ripping this chain to shreds. This new chain stretches' to much it just cant handle my power. So if you ever break your chain wear your badge with pride as I will mine.

Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of his, but it seems he does not have his edge this season. On the other hand being 2nd in the TDF green jersey and currently second in the Giro purple jersey would be impressive for anyone else, it just proves how high of a standard he has set in the previous years.

Hallo Freunde des Radsports, Um meinen Fahrrad-Kauf Anfang der Woche fortzusetzen, habe ich mir direkt einen neuen Tacho dazu auf Amazon bestell: Sigma BC 14.16 STS - um genau zu sein. Ist meiner Meinung nach preislich noch in einem angemessen Rahmen und hat genau die Funktionen die ich auch benötige. Um ihn auch richtig einzustellen und exakte Werte (Geschwindigkeit, Strecke,...) zu bekommen habe ich extra nochmal Herrn Google gefragt wie man denn den Umfang des Rades exakt bestimmt. Dabei bin ich auf zwei Methoden gestoßen: 1. Umfang = 2*Radius (Achsmittelpunkt bis Mantelaußenseite)*π(Pi) 2. Exakt eine Umdrehung mit dem Rad fahren und zurückgelegte Strecke am Boden abmessen. (Ich habe beide Methoden mehrmals ausprobiert und auch meine Mitbewohner um Hilfe gefragt um Fehler zu vermeiden.) Und jetzt zu meinem Problem: Bei Methode 1. bin ich auf einen Wert von ca. 2136mm und bei Methode 2. auf einen Wert von 2011mm gekommen? Welchen Wert gebe ich jetzt in meinen Tacho ein? Sind die mir beigebrachten Rechengesetze in Wahrheit Lügen und stimmen in diesem Falle sogar bis zu 125mm (12,5cm) nicht überein? Was mache ich falsch? Wie macht ihr es wenn ihr euch den Tacho neu installiert? Danke schon jetzt für eure Hilfe und möge euch nie eine Panne/ein Unfall ereilen.
