First 'Real' Road Ride in 20 Years Today

Just sharing because I'm still pumped. I'm 50+, my kids are finally out of the house, I've got a great bike (Argon 18 w/DA) and replaced all the other gear I disposed of a decade or so ago that I'd acquired doing a ton of road riding while in graduate school in the 90's. I've spent the past winter on rollers (700 miles). Today (Saturday morning) I made breakfast, got everyone out of the house, and then swapped out my shiny roller tires for a gummy new set of GP5000's. 65 and sunny. Spent 90 minutes on a 22.5 mile loop. 1,585 ft of elevation for which I was rewarded with 12 miles of negative gradients all the way home. That was my first real ride in more than 20 years, and it was awesome! I stopped in front of the garage, clipped out, checked the Garmin and ALMOST hit "Resume." I was dying to keep riding...but it's only March. Looking forward to a great first year back in the saddle!

Ich war mit dem Rad auf einer wichtigen Verkehrsader unterwegs, und habe mir auf einem recht schmalen Abschnitt die ganze Spur genommen, weil man dort ansonsten ganz gerne statt mit 1,5 Metern Abstand eher mit ca. 0,3 Metern Abstand überholt wird. Während ich also da lang radel, werde ich von Hinten angehupt, und ich krieg sofort so nen Hals. Als die Straße wieder breiter wird, und wir eine Kreuzung mit für uns roten Ampeln erreichen, überholt mich das hupende Auto, ein Kleinwagen, gefahren von einer älteren Dame, und bremst mich milde aggressiv aus. Nicht gefährlich, aber von mir defintiv als aggressiv interpretiert. Ich muss an dieser Kreuzung nach links abbiegen, und sie will offenbar geradeaus fahren. Die Ampel ist rot, also komme ich zu ihrer Linken zum Stehen. Sie rollt ihr Fenster runter, und ich bin bereit zum freien Meinungsaustausch. Was kommt? Autofahrerin: "Hey, du hast nen Handschuh verloren! Musst ein gutes Stück zurückfahren." Ich: "Oh... Dankeschön!" Also bin ich dankbar ca. 200 Meter zurückgeradelt, und hab meinen Handschuh wieder aufgesammelt. Es gibt also doch gute Geschichten des Angehuptwerdens. :) Edit: Ich hatte meine Handschuhe in meinen Jackentaschen verstaut. Irgendwie ist ein Handschuh da rausgerüttelt worden.

Due to some tendonitis in my hamstrings I've been doing a bunch of online reading about cycling body mechanics. One thing I keep coming across is the idea that pulling up does not actually help produce more power. Here is an example: https://gearandgrit.com/the-cycling-myth-that-wont-die-pedaling-circles/ 1.) If this is true, are clipless pedals just a marketing ploy? 2.) I can understand why this is inefficient on the flats, but what about climbs and fast accelerations? The second study cited in that article had the subjects doing tests at 90w and 200w. I just wonder what would happen if they were tested on an incline at 500w and 900w?

Hi everyone. Over the last couple of days I have been more and more overwhelmed and drawn into by what seems to be a crazy idea, for no reason other than it would be a phenomenal way to challenge myself. The crazy idea - to cycle around Iceland (1,300+ km) in 2 weeks in 6 months time, in September. Now the funny thing is that I have pretty much 0 experience fo cycling. I used to do it as a kid, and know the basics - spin the pedals and don’t fall. Having gone to the gym today, I can do 13.6 km (8.5 miles) in 30 mins fairly comfortably on a cycling machine (even though I know that it’s a bit different in the real world). I’m based in the U.K. and am a fairly big guy (6’4”), 22 years old. So, given the pretext, is it in the realm of possibility for me to cycle around 100 km every day for 14 days straight, in Iceland? I know that this sounds extremely naive, but I would genuinely love to do this and challenge myself. Thanks for the help everyone!
