Notice: To ease alarm, I want to start by saying that neither of us was bit. The pit bull never made contact with us. I’m shaken up. For the first time, I’m scared of cycling. I just started cycling a little under 2 months ago. I’ve been a long distance runner for most of my life but because of some overgrown bones I was suggested to switch to cycling. Id never cross trained with cycling before because I hated it, but I’ve grown to truly love it. For the first time ever, I saw a future that didn’t include only long distance running. Until today. On a road I’ve been on before (and just passed that same house yesterday, twice!) my dad and I were attacked by two dogs. My dad has cycled his whole life and started with yelling “bad dog, no!” In every case of being chased so far, that has worked. Today, the dog didn’t care. I was in front and turned around without leaving my bike and my dad got off and got behind his bike. I saw an opportunity to ride away, but it could have been my worst choice. The pit bull chased me at 25 miles an hour and was catching up to me. Fortunately for me, something clicked in his mind and he turned around. Unfortunately for my dad, what clicked in his mind was a renewed desire to attack my dad. My dad was about 3 minutes behind a bike holding his water bottle to spray the dog while I called 911. We were very fortunate that 2 cars came that seemed to understand the situation and helped my dad get safely away. A policeman came, we gave him all our info and told him what happened, and he said he’d investigate and we’d get a call. I’m shaken. I don’t want to ride again. I have a child and another one born sometime this or next week and I don’t want to be maimed or killed by a dog because I want a workout. I’m not asking for advice or anything, but I’m open to it. I’m not sure why I’m posting, just venting I guess. Thanks for indulging me.

Today I’m taking a day off work to ride my bike. This will be my longest ride (20miles 1 way) to visit my GF at her work. My current longest ride is 22 miles roundtrip without break so I’m sure I can make it today distance-wise. I don't mean this as a complaint, but rather I'm ultimately curious about why - ​ Why do bike seats lack any sort of padding and why do you have to make up for that padding with special clothes instead of someone just making a soft and comfy seat? I keep getting told "Buy a wider saddle and padded pants", not "buy a wider, padded saddle". ​ Like imagine if you're walking into an airplane and they're like "yeah, if you wanna be comfortable, you've gotta wear padded flying pants - the seats had all their cushioning removed" and that's what I feel like every time someone points me to cycling shorts lol - are there really no soft saddles? Do I have to dress for a sport just to be comfortable on a 1.5 hour leisure ride to grab lunch? Feels like a lot of effort where the problem could be permanently made up elsewhere... My ass hurting is the one thing preventing me from making this 2 weeks straight of biking without breaks, but I also don't want to go shopping for moooooooooooooooore accessories and be on the hook for all the extra laundry.

Ich mache jetzt mal Provokations-Mathematik zum Wochenende: Basis der Berechnungen ist der wunderbare Rechner von Kreuzotter, mit dem man wunderbar diverse Fahrradszenarien berechnen kann: http://www.kreuzotter.de/deutsch/speed.htm Wir wissen ja, dass das wirklich Anstrengende beim Bergfahren neben der Steigung vor allem das zu steigende Gewicht ist. Logischerweise ist die gleiche Steigung mit einem Lastenrad voller Steine deutlich anstrengender und benötigt mehr Watt in den Pedalen als mit einem Carbon-Rennrad. Und daraus ergibt sich auch, dass a) ein schwererer Fahrer für die gleiche Geschwindigkeit mehr Watt benötigt und b) ein höheres Körpergewicht irgendwann auch die Motorunterstützung eines eBikes "auffrisst". Nehmen wir eine handelsübliche Steigung von 15% und einen 1,80m großen Fahrer auf einem 10kg schweren Rennrad. Dieser benötigt für eine Ziel-Geschwindigkeit von 10km/h abhängig vom Körpergewicht: Körpergewicht | Watt ---|--- 60| 303 80 | 388 100 | 474 120 | 557 140 | 644 Ein deutsches Pedelec darf mit maximal 250 Watt zusteuern. Der 140kg Fahrer muss also 644-250 = 394 Watt leisten und trampelt damit trotz Motor mehr in die Pedale als ein 60kg oder 80kg-Fahrer. Dieser Gap wird noch größer, wenn man bedenkt, dass eBikes deutlich schwerer sind als normale Fahrräder. Zwischen einem Lightweigt-Rennrad aus Carbon mit seinen 7kg und einem eBike mit gerne mal über 25kg liegen ja Welten und das führt dann dazu, dass auch der 120kg Fahrer mit Motor am Hang mehr leisten muss als der dünne Rennradler. Etwas weniger harte Steigungen machen das etwas weniger extrem: Bei einer 10% Steigung und wieder 10km/h sieht das so aus: Körpergewicht | Watt ---|--- 60| 208 140| 440 440-250 = 190W, hier hätte der Rennradfahrer also 18 Watt mehr zu leisten. Steigern wir die Steigung auf 20%, dann sieht das wieder anders aus: Körpergewicht | Watt ---|--- 60| 396 140| 844 Hier ist der schwerere Fahrer mit 844-250 = 594 Watt deutlich beanspruchter. Denkt also am Wochenende mal dran, wenn euch ein eBiker am Berg überholt. Und wisst Ihr, wer am Berg richtig am Arsch ist? Schwere Fahrer ohne Motor.
