This will probably go down in flames, but I'm fired up enough to not care. I live in a mountain town in Utah that has a huge population of cyclists. I got into road cycling because it's a relatively safe area, and it seemed like a fun thing to do. Now I'm selling all my stuff for a multitude of reasons, mostly health-related. But I must say it will be nice to no longer be associated with the elitist mentality that comes with road cycling in particular. Below are a few examples of why I feel this way. "cyclists have an equal right to the road as cars do". Yes, they do. But just because you have the right to be in the road doesn't mean you are going to win at a game of chicken with a 4,000lb tub of steel. Where I live, there are ample trails and bike lanes to take advantage of. The roads that don't have a shoulder people are more than willing to give adequate room when passing. But when cyclists insist on riding two or more wide on-road that has both a cycling lane and a bike path, you can see the frustration it causes with drivers. Being courteous goes both ways, even if your precious strava time will suffer a little bit. I often see stories of a road rage incident with a cyclist, and they almost always paint the driver as some maniac and the cyclist a perfect saint. Yet I've seen drivers flipped off and yelled at by cyclists in this town for things that warranted no such action. Even if the driver made a mistake, turning it into a shouting match isn't doing any good. It's only gonna make that driver more aggravated with all other cyclists. Then you have the blatant 'everyone can yield to me' cyclists. In the last week, I've had 3 incidents on my 4-mile drive to work. One gentleman merged into my lane from a residential parking lot. He didn't slow down or stop and didn't look until he was at the centerline (he was on the oncoming lane at this point). I thought I was about to hit him so I slammed on my brakes, and then he slowed down to go behind my car. Now we are nearly stalled next to each other with oncoming traffic headed his way. He didn't seem to mind any of this, but It was a ridiculous situation to put everyone in vs yielding for a few seconds. Second incident. Cyclist crossing a 35mph street. They are in a group of 4 crossing from left to right in front of me. Two cyclists are ahead by a slight gap, so they decided to linger in the middle of my lane for the others to catch up. There was no need for it, and it's utterly dangerous. Pull off the road and wait before or after you cross, but don't stop in the middle of the road and expect that not to be an issue. God forbid they do that in front of someone texting and driving. While that will still be the drivers fault, it just seems like they are asking for trouble. And the last incident that happened this morning. I'm driving behind a cement truck with a line of 6ish cars behind me. So we are all doing maybe 30mph. This older lady in a full high viz kit is actually using the trail, which is great. Until she just randomly juts out on the crosswalk looking like she's going to go directly in front of the cement truck. We all slam on our breaks and come to a full stop to find out she's making the world's widest U-turn. Her front wheel turned maybe 6-inches from the center line. No acknowledgment that should almost caused an accident, or that we all thought she was about to get hit. Now, probably the most important part of all this is that these aren't beginner cyclists. These are full kit, ride regularly folks. It's almost more infuriating, because you almost never see the beginners doing this kind of stupid shit. It's always the folks that look like they are prepping for the tour of Utah. And a few mtn bike bros. Either way, I feel it's giving all cyclists a really bad image. And since I'm ranting, I'll add that the superiority complex some roadies have is just insane. My mother is handicapped, but she just started riding an E-mountain bike. She tries to be nice and wave or at least acknowledge the other cyclists she sees, but the roadies just scoff or ignore her completely. Just because someone doesn't have the same bike doesn't mean you have to be a dick to them. Anyway, this is at least my experience with it. Rant over. EDIT 1: It's been pointed out many times that I'm painting all cyclists with the same brush. That's not my intention. My point was that the shitty cyclists that are out there, do make all of us look bad. It makes it even worse when it's not some beginner, but instead some die-hard roadie with entitlement and an ego problem. EDIT 2: Sadly, someone got hit on one of the very roads I'm complaining about. Roughly an hour after posting this. I don't know details, my sister just saw the aftermath. They must be okay because it's not on the local news. But I can't help and think if they'd been on the multi-use path this wouldn't have happened. EDIT 3: I'm done debating this. I think it's pretty well beat to death and for the most part I've said all I feel the need too. I hope everyone gets their perfect ride in the near future, KOM and all. Just please, realize that SHARE THE ROAD goes both ways. Cheers.

This happened during my morning ride here in Flanders. I was riding on a quiet street, when suddenly a truck pulls out of his parking spot, no blinkers, probably not even a look in the mirrors. If I hadn't left 2 meters as a safety distance when passing parked cars/trucks, I would probably have repainted his fenders red. When he saw me in front of his truck, he started honking and moving his arms, like I was the one at fault, so I shook my head, flipped the bird and moved on. A few minutes later, I heard that big truck a few meters behind me, in a descend with blind corners on a street where 2 cars wouldn't be able to cross, at 40km/h, honking like a madman and approaching even more. I decided to take the first sharp right turn, he kept driving straight on. I don't want to think about what would've happened if a car came, or if people where walking, it was just crazy. Just wanted to share this to remind everyone to ride safe!

Pretty noob to road cycling, only have about 300 miles under my belt. Wife and I were doing an 18 mile ride when about half way through, I almost go down during a turn due to gravel on the road. Maybe I was leaning too far during the turn and the tires lost traction, not sure. Anyway, I recover and we keep going. Suddenly I find myself getting winded/slightly struggling to hold a pace that we are super comfortable at typically. Chalk it up to poor nutrition on my part and keep going. About 15 minutes later it all makes sense because I realize my front tire is flat af. I suspect I hit something sharp during the sketchy turn and I had been riding on a flat since then. Cue the most frustrating 30 minutes of my cycling career. Getting the tire off is a fucking nightmare lmao. No YT video could have prepared me for this. I use a plastic mini pry bar thing that I bought to finally get it off. Get the old tube out, get the new tube in (thankfully I had all the tools/supplies even though I had never actually used them). Then the real struggle starts. HOLY SHIT is it difficult to get the last bit of the tire back on! I'm watching YT vids because I MUST be doing something wrong (is it supposed to be this hard??), fighting with the damn thing, taking a break because my fingers are tired from all the struggling lmao, and so forth. About 20 minutes later, I manage to get the fucking thing back on. No hill I have climbed or distance PR I've set brought as much joy and elation. All that said, do you flat fixing pros out there have any tips for me? what should I have done different to not exert myself more on the flat fixing than the ride itself?

So we put a wager on and he hired a road bike. I gave him a time limit of 10 hours to ride 136km (84.5mi) with a total decline of 601m and 201m of incline. I fucking regret taking this bet at $600. Feel like a mug, plus he had a tail wind for the majority of the ride, was a good laugh at the end of the day though!

So I made this post a few weeks ago describing a recent accident. https://www.reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/gpxkjb/help_post_accident_advice/ I finally got the estimate back from the bike shop and tried contacting the people to discuss the situation. Per my previous post I was hoping to work with them and just have them help with damages because I felt bad. They stopped responding to me for a few days. Then I get a message from an attorney that they've hired to defend them, before I could even talk to them as people. The attorney tells me I'm at fault for not paying attention and if I peruse the matter they will go after me for injury to the minor. I talk to a few lawyers, some that note them selves on the web and bicycle lawyers. None will help me because I have no significant bodily injury. No one will work for pennies of the portion of any reclaimed damages even if I would win. Here's the kicker where there is no law for this. The cops won't take a report. It's a "civil matter". You're responsible for gathering their personal information which I thought the cops would gather. They did not, because there is no report for it. I'm somehow supposed to get people to give up their address and personal info without police?? I tried following up with the report and like I said none was ever made because there is no report for the information I provided. I was told I need to hire an investigator to get their address to even be able to serve them with any small claims documents. Talking with various lawyers. There's apparently a whole area of damage to personal property you can do "accidentally" with no law for repercussions. Cops will not handle the matter at the time of the incident and you're left to convince a judge of your side with no hard evidence. Cops won't collect any. You can lie about who you are and where you live and the person you damaged is SOL. I'm pretty dumbfounded right now. From lawyers to police telling me its solely up to me to solve this, even from the time of the accident. There's no one there for you. If I'd had a camera on my bike this would be a much easier small claims court issue. My renters insurance won't cover it, only if it was a car and not another bike. Get a camera and get cycling specific insurance.

Moin Radlerfreunde! Da es dieses Jahr scheiße mit der (Auslands)Urlaubsplanung aussieht, ich aber noch 30 Urlaubstage + Überstunden abbauen muss, überlege ich seit ein paar Tagen, ob ich nicht einfach das Fahrrad bemanne und quer durch Deutschland fahre. Als Norddeutscher bietet sich quasi die D9 an, für mich dann ab Lemwerder/Bremen bis nach Füssen. [https://www.bikemap.net/de/o/2013999](https://www.bikemap.net/de/o/2013999) Nun bin ich allerdings nicht der geübteste Fernradfahrer - die bislang einzige längere Tour waren 5 Tage mit insgesamt 600km (und knapp 5.500hm). Meine Fragen: * Kennt ihr die D9, lohnt sich das? * Da es ja immer (oft) am Wasser entlanggeht, sollten sich die Höhenmeter ja in Grenzen halten. Von dem letzten Trip weiß ich nur noch, dass Berge doof sind, man niemals genug Sonnenschutz auftragen kann und ich viel zu viel Klamotten eingepackt hatte. Und dass ich niemals mehr ohne eine gescheite Fernradstraße los möchte. Zu oft musste ich Sandpisten oder Bundesstraßen ohne Radwege befahren, das hat mir keinen Spaß gemacht. Neben der D9 sehe ich im Moment keine Fernradstrecke, die für mich in Frage kommt. Allerdings kann ich mir vorstellen, dass ich nach der Ankunft in Füssen noch etwas weiter radele. Wichtig ist noch, dass ich am Ende mit der Bahn nach Hause fahren kann. Eine Rundtour möchte ich vermeiden (außer, es gibt eine schöne Alternative).
