I've been considering a new bike, lusting after belt drives and an Enviolo hub. But the only reasons I own a bike are practical, and a lot of my practical trips are trips to stores, to downtown, etc. So I've been caught up in this loop of thought: 1. Want a nice bike 2. Remember that there's no way I could leave that bike parked outside a shopping area on a regular basis without it getting stripped 3. Consider whether I could be paranoid enough about security to make it work (multiple U-locks/chains, hexlox on everything, bag over the bike so it can't be scoped out, alarm box, etc), but rule it out due to cost 4. Consider whether I could get a folding bike portable enough to carry/roll with me into shops, but rule it out due to cost or other compromises 5. Curse this situation where car parking is guaranteed and effortless whereas bike parking is spotty, unpredictable and insecure 6. Give up and resolve to just keep riding my current bike which wouldn't upset me so much for it to be stolen 7. Back to #1 I'm interested to hear if anyone has a nice bike and finds a way to use it in theft-prone cities, but mostly just venting. I've moved to a new place in a nice climate and I'm resolving to try to walk/cycle everywhere I can, but in spite of this city trending in a good direction (building lots of bike lanes, just opened a free bike valet parking downtown), it still seems so hostile to cycling in many ways.

At the beginning of the year I ditched my standard pedals for clip in for the first time. Aside from the game changing experience and initial nerves of using them it's been largely a great experience. My only problem is walking in them on any indoor surface that isn't carpet feels impossible. Mid-points in my rides are usually pub stops and have started taking a spare pair of trainers with to walk with inside. Ever since I slipped on a varnished wooden floor throwing 2 pints of Guinness over myself (never visited that place again) I feel like bambi on ice walking on any smooth surface. I wear shimano spd road cleats if that makes any difference. Edit: Recently been taking flip-flops with me rather than trainers.

So, out of sheer luck I just got a garage right next to my apartment for next to no money which is fantastic. I want to turn it into a bit of a workshop where I can mess with things. I've always wanted to get into biking. I've enjoyed trail running before, and in general, nature, so gravel biking seems like a good choice for me. I could also commute on the thing when I wish to; I live In Copenhagen, Denmark which is very bike friendly. However.. Gravel bikes are massively expensive and I don't see myself buying a brand new one. The used market is hot, and I don't know what to look for. Seeing as I have the space to build my own, and a decent frame I found online, I figured.. Why not try it. I have most tools needed, I think, and I know a bike mechanic nearby I can hit up for issues. Basically, I'll have a frame and nothing else. Is this a bad idea considering I know next to nothing about the components needed? I guess I can learn off of google, reddit, youtube, and whatever and I don't mind putting in the hours. I don't need a fancy bike with electronic gear shifting or so, just something decent I can go on longer trips on when weather permits. I'm an engineer, so I love tinkering by nature. That being said, am I taking on too much thinking of doing this?

Ich habe vor nicht allzu langer Zeit das Radfahren zum sportlichen Vergnügen für mich entdeckt und habe dabei besondere Freude an der Langstrecke über eine bunte Mischung aus Schotter, Trails und Asphalt. Ich bin nun auf der Suche nach Events, bei denen ich Gleichgesinnte treffen und vielleicht auch ein bisschen Rennfahrer spielen kann. In Nordamerika scheint es ja eine sehr aktive Gravelszene zu geben, in der viele für Amateure offene Rennen stattfinden, aber meine Suche nach solchen Events in diesem Teil der Welt war bisher relativ erfolglos. Kennt sich jemand hier aus und kann vergleichbare Veranstaltungen in Deutschland/Mitteleuropa empfehlen? Also Richtung Gravel/XC ab 100km und mit Massenstart.
