I am so proud of myself for finally getting one of these, and I know it probably isn't much to you guys, but I just wanted to share my accomplishment. i had my first night ride in the wild ever this weekend. I had it in mind for some time and this hot weather finally pushed me to try it. Climbed a 1800m/5900ft mountain going up a tarmac road that cuts through a forest. Complete silence, almost no cars going up and down the whole night, no other riders, just me there, my thoughts and the light of two torches showing the way, one on my helmet, the other on my bike, you turn them off and its pitch black. It can be a bit scary, every once in a while you hear some loud sound coming from the dark and i tell you even a bunny sounds like a bear in that situation. sometime a branch will fall down for whatever reason and your heart beat monitor will register a peek. But i've also seen for the first time animals i've never met in the wild, a badger and a beech marten, you don't usually see them during the day, plus various other animals like bats, toads, squirrels, mice. then, hours later, you finally reach the pasture altitude, you start hearing the sound of cowbells and the forest finally opens up: in the complete darkness the sky is literally sparkling, so many stars it's crazy, a boy like me living in the city is not used to such a spectacle. then finally dawn comes, no one is around so you're basically the king of the mountain, for real not in the sense Strava means it, you can turn off torches and the nature surrounding you turns up its colors, the silence, the dawn, the altitude, the flowers, birds chirping, a true spectacle that nature is putting on just for you. And then finally climbing down, first riding an old exposed gravel military road cutting the side of a very steep mountain, then dropping into another forest, this time being able to fully admire the nature around you: again you alone, in the lovely chill of the early morning, and when you finally reach your final goal down in the town, you finally see for the first time other riders warming up and about to start their own rides, looking at you and not being able to understand why at 8 in the morning you look already so tired and you have that grin on your face. damn it, that was a ride i'll always remember.

Angenommen ich fahre mit meinem Rad auf eine dieser Ampeln zu, die ein Fahrrad in der Streuscheibe haben, aber nur Rot oder Grün haben, aber eben kein Gelb. Die Ampel schaltet kurz bevor ich sie erreiche von Grün auf Rot, muss ich hier theoretisch jederzeit in der Lage sein noch halten zu können? Das würde bedeuten, dass ich eigentlich vor jeder dieser Ampeln abbremsen müsste, mit 30 km/h kann ich wenige Meter vorher sicherlich nicht mehr rechtzeitig anhalten. Oder gibt es eine sonstige Regel, wie mit dieser Situation umzugehen ist?

*chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh* For the last 4 weeks, that noise has been the bane of my existence. Something. Some THING in my drive train is grinding. Throwing off my calm. *Mocking* my craftsman's pride at being able to maintain my own bicycle and doing 4th grade screw/spring/cable fiddling. And. I. Can't. ***FIND IT!!!*** Pick up the rear tire, crank a few times, nothing. Put it up on a lift, crank it, nothing. Put it on pavement, put some weight on the bike, *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh.* Sometimes when I pedal, I hear it. Others when I coast I hear it. *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh.* Grinding. Rubbing. Metal on.... something. And sometimes I think it's just ground itself away. The rare problem that solves itself. Then I bike past a wall, or a series of parked cars, and there it is. Like an annoying shadow. *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh* But I am a *man*, goddammit. I have *tools!* This problem isn't beyond me! So, first step. Maybe it's my tire rubbing on my fender. Last time I trued the rear tire, I didn't *think* there was any hop, but something might have come loose. So I adjust the fender way off the rear tire. *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh.* Still there. Next thing. Maybe it's the brake rotor. I know the front one went a bit squirrelly last time I had the tire off. So I check. Rotor is true. Pads don't seem to be rubbing. Get up a good burst of speed downhill, brake with the front brake. Check the back rotor.... cool to the touch. But just to be safe, I back everything off. Plenty of daylight between the rotor, the pad and the stop. Test again. *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh.* Not the rotor. Maybe it's the rear derailleur. Could be the chain is rubbing the next gear on the cassette. It happens with the front one from time to time, so why wouldn't it with the back? So I screw with the shift cable tension. In, out, check the shift throw, check the alignment. Test. *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh.* Fuck. Maybe I've got something caught in the derailleur, or the whole drivetrain. Possible. So I pull the rear tire off. Pull the cassette and chain off. Soak overnight. Scrub the whole works clean. Reassemble, re-index the gears, re-lube the works. Test. *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh* Teeth-grindingly frustrated. What the *literal* fuck?! There's no rhyme or reason to this. About the only thing I notice is it's mostly prevalent when my right foot is lowest. But coasting, cranking, whatever. Still there. This is pissing me off to no end. Like that stupid thing you said when you were 10, it will. Not. Leave. Me. Alone!!! My buddy is biking behind me today, to my 5 o'clock. Listening. Hearing. He thinks it's my fender, but I show him the clearance. Not that. He thinks it's my brake. I spin the tire and show him the daylight. Not that. We do a kilometer of flat, even pavement. He hears it. "It's metal on metal." So we pull over. He goes over the same check-list I have. Fender, brakes, wheel. I pluck my spokes. A few are looser than I like. Maybe it's the rim flexing and causing them to rub on each other? Makes sense, since the only time I hear it is when there's weight over the tires. I'll make a note of it, and will tighten the spokes up tomorrow. *chhhsh... chhhsh.. chhhhsh* Then he notices something. "Hey. Is that reflector supposed to be so close to the hub?" "What?" "Yeah, your reflector is sitting way closer to the hub than mine is." I check. Fuck *all* the ducks. I move it 1 inch closer to the rim, hard up against the spoke to either side of the clip it's on. Double-check. Crank again. Silence. Sweet, sweet, silence. The only sound is the chain running through the cassette, and the tires hissing on the pavement. No. Way. I feel Le dumb. The whole way back, I'm hyper aware of my ride. It couldn't *possibly* have been a $1 part on a 50-cent clip on a $2000 machine causing me *all this grief.* Could it? No effing way. But the whole way home: silence. Mechanical smoothness. The joy of a machine functioning at as high a level as I can be arsed to make it. :-| I'm sitting here, thinking there must be some lesson. Some take-away. Some moral. The rest of the story. And I'm coming up deuces. Sometimes you're too clever by half. This time, though, I out-did myself. I think I might have been too dumb by 4.
