I was returning home by car early this morning from dropping my mother off at the train station. It was that deceptive time just before dawn, where you can sort of see your surroundings, but it’s still basically dark outside. I was coming to a stop sign and noticed this glaring light coming down the cross street. It was at a very strange height and travelling at moderate speed, but this was a four-way stop, so I started through the intersection, since I had clearly arrived first. But I quickly realized that this vehicle was not stopping, so I jammed on the brakes (the anti-lock mechanism even kicked in), and a cyclist (commuter) went whizzing through about a foot in front of my bumper. The weird light ended up being a very bright headlamp on the top of his helmet. Because of its glare and the pre-dawn light, I hadn’t been able to see anything behind the light, let alone that it was a cyclist. I didn’t lean on the horn, but I did give the guy a few short honks, just to let him know how close he had come to a serious accident (or worse). Not sure what I could have done differently; I was probably more shocked than he was. I work from home, so I don't usually drive at this hour, and I don't see many cyclists riding with lights like that. Next time I’ll probably recognize the dazzling light at a weird height, but this sure makes me realize that those helmet cycling lamps are probably more dangerous and deceptive than anything else. Be safe out there, brothers and sisters! Edit: Just want to thank the r/cycling community for all the responses. This discussion has really made me feel a lot better about what happened.

I have a "few" Giant road bikes, all in the Defy family. A few are Alloy, orhers are Carbon. I like the factory bar tape. Both the application and the feel. Aftermarket tapes that I've tried are very different. Anyone have some insight into the material of the factory tape? Cork, silicon, etc... My carbon Defy appears to be a 2-ply.
