So last week I had the unfortunate experience of my first crash. Just wanted to get this off my chest and see if anyone here has suggestions about how to move forward from this. I've been biking pretty regularly for a few years now, and been enjoying endurance rides every nice weekend I had. I'm usually pretty careful, and keep an eye out for road hazards and other vehicles, especially living in an urban area (Boston) where bikers are getting hit left and right on a daily basis. To complicate matters, it wasn't just your regular wipe-out, but vs. a car at an intersection. Long story short, I was working on some hill repeats and this particular stretch of road has a 4-way intersection halfway down the hill. Wonderful, right? I probably got too comfortable with this intersection as 9 times out of 10, there would never be anyone at it as I approached from either direction. So on my last descent of the day, the intersection looked clear in all directions, and given I was moving about 35 mph I didn't really intend on stopping. Then mere seconds before I enter, a car pulls up to the right hand side of the intersection, stops, and starts slowly proceeding through the intersection (as they of course had the right of way at this point. Rater than slamming the breaks and risking flipping, my reaction was to try to get around this car. Bad idea. After an instant moment of regret and realization that *oh shit, this is actually about to happen,* I collide with the car, go flying about 30 ft, and land at the opposite corner of the intersection. Thankfully I didn't hit my head. Was taken to the hospital and checked out. Ended up with a [small fracture in my wrist](http://i.imgur.com/JjqVgjJ.jpg) and some nasty road rash, but no head/neck injury or anything more permanent. [Everyone involved was really glad I was wearing a helmet.](http://i.imgur.com/Qq8fqDd.jpg). Because it was my fault, I get no compensation of course, so the out-of-pocket medical bills (thank god I have insurance or I'd have much bigger problems) and the bike are my own costs to bear. I was even given a ticket at the scene for failure to stop at the stop sign. Ouch! I just got my bike back from the police department, who took it after the crash. I was expecting a total loss but after seeing the bike, I am wondering if there is some hope in restoring it. Assuming the frame is OK to ride (which is a **big** maybe) I'd be looking at a new wheelset, 105 shifter, fork, inspection and labor to mend it all and readjust cables and things like that. I'm thinking this would be about $600 minimum in parts. What would you do? Pay more than 60% of the total value in repairs, or start saving for an overall upgrade next year? If I were to go new-bike route, I'd probably want to save up and put about $2.5-3.5k towards a used bike or discontinued model. I really loved this bike and have some great memories (first century, group rides, mountain ascents) on it, but being in this situation for the first time, I'm not really sure what to do. Appreciate any comments, suggestions, or advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation, or knows bikes well.
