So I’m relatively new to cycling been at it a few weeks and today is the first near collision I’ve had. I was on a bike/walking path that crosses many busy roads. When I got to the crossing I stopped and waited. The traffic in one lane stopped and I didn’t see any cars coming from the other lane, so I proceed. And no sooner am I about to cross over the second lane a car comes barreling along as if nothing was there. They didn’t even try to slow down until it was too late if I hadn’t checked and braked at the last second it would’ve been game over. The motorists that did stop we’re all like WTF?! at the car that almost hit me. The thing that’s really fucking with me though is not 6 seconds later I saw a mom and her very young child biking on the same path in the other “lane”. I keep thinking “what if it had been that kid and not me?” “What if he couldn’t have stopped in time?” Drives me fucking nuts. Anyway sorry for the rant.

Hey guys, I live in NYC and biking here for the past 6 years. I don’t ride much in the city anymore but just around my neighborhood mostly. Like a lot of cyclists here I have been guilty of reacting emotionally to drivers cutting me off or doing reckless things that put in danger. I usually flip them off or throw my hands up in the air in a “”wtf” gesture. Almost every single instance where this has happened the driver will immediately start screaming profanities at me as if they had done absolutely nothing wrong. It actually surprises me sometimes just how defensive and oblivious they can be. As if I am just going around flipping people off randomly for no reason. I am a patient cyclist and I don’t act like a jerk on the road and give drivers plenty of respect. In my experience riding in this city I have drawn the conclusion that most drivers dispise cyclists and any sort of unfriendly gesture made by a cyclist on the roads is met with extreme aggression. I have also had a few occurrences over the past few years where somebody has followed me and threatened me. After each of these occurrences I chilled out a lot more and would refrain from flipping or telling somebody off for quite a while. But after a while I let my emotions get the better of me and sooner or later I am reacting with anger towards reckless drivers. It’s hard for me to refrain sometimes as I feel like I have to let the driver know that they did something stupid. It’s also just an instinctive reaction that sometimes I don’t even think about before acting. Anyway earlier today I was riding in the bike lane near my house when a guy in a white van pulled up right in front of me to buy a snow cone from a street cart. I went around him looked through the window and couldn’t help but stick up the middle finger. He immediately started screaming at me “you motherfu*#ker” and decided he didn’t want that snow cone after all. Instead he speeded up alongside me, started screaming more shit and pulled up right in front of me to get out of his van. Now I am thinking, this guy could be a total psycho and want to stab me or maybe just straight up fight me. Either way the outcome is never gonna be good and I am either going to hospital or going to jail. So I bail down a side street and off I go with my tail between my legs. Anyway I am now at a point where I need to face facts that if I am not ready to get off my bike and fist fight with a driver then I really shouldn’t be flipping them off in the first place. There are a lot of pycho’s out there and you just never know who’s behind the wheel. I’ve also heard some horror stories over the years or cyclists been run over deliberately by drivers in acts of rage. As much as it sucks I feel like it is best to just take a deep breath and carry on without scolding a driver for doing something stupid. I love riding my bike but lately I am starting to think it’s not worth it in a city like this. Traffic is getting worse and worse and the aggression amongst drivers is rampant as people are stressed out. I am interested to hear if anybody has had an incident on their bike which has led to or come close to leading to violence. Thanks for reading..and ride safe.
