Hi Guys, I asked this over at /r/ukbike/ but thought I would ask here too, hope that's ok. About 10 years ago I used to love mountain biking but have not touched my bike in a decade. I need to lose a lot of weight as I am 21 stone (almost 300lbs), so decide to dig out the old girl and take it out again. But alas, 10 years of sitting in the shed plus years of abuse and my bike has had it, so I need a new one. I wont be riding off road nowadays, I just want to plod along some back roads to get fitter. I won't be doing 100 mile rides or anything like that. I just want to take it on the road for an hour or so 3 or 4 times a week. I figure a road bike is ideal for what I want to use it for... the only problem is my fondness for pies. They all look thin and flimsey compared to my old MTB, I wonder if a road bike can actually handle a fat bloke? Am I better off with a new mountain bike as they are sturdy and will deal with my weight despite being less suited to what I actually want to use it for, or is a road bike more rugged than it seems? Or some kind of hybrid thing if they exist? They didnt list any max weight limits and the frame looked fairly sturdy. It has 28 spoke wheels which I figure will give more strength than some of the lighter ones. The tyres look super flimsy to me at 28mm but that's because I am used to MTB tyres - apparently, they can be upgraded to upto 40mm. No idea if to get 40mm I need to change the rims or just the tyres or even if I would have to change them atall? Basically, what would you recommend - shall I just get another MTB as they are built solid, or there a roadbike or a hybrid type thing out there that will suit my needs better? I have about £500 max to spend. Suggestions of what to buy are welcome as I know sod all and despite reading a lot, I am struggling to find advice for a fat bastard! PS - I promise you wont see me out in lycra. I wouldn't do that to society. *** EDIT *** Guys, you lot are awesome. I was not expecting any response, and I was kinda expecting negativity for being overweight when most of you are super fit.... bloody brilliant advice and attitude from everyone on here. You have all got me super excited. I think a hybrid, touring or gravel bike is the way forward. I thought £500 was a reasonable budget but it seems thats entry level at best, so I am looking on eBay and facebook marketplace for something used and in good condition. Cant wait to get out there again, thank you all so much for the advice and enthusiasm, its genuinely amazing.
